Show Vernal guard train for SQT Members of the Vernal National Guard unit Company A of the 1457th Btln. held their monthly drill this past weekend. Saturday, SQT training was conducted on Land Navigation. Sgt. Dan Gardner was the instructor. Several tech films were viewed and then maps and compasses were passed out. To reinforce the instruction from the films, the men were required to plot azimuths, identify land marks and use the compass in conjunction with the maps. Exercises in plotting a course for night travel was also explained. Sunday morning religious services were conducted by Sgt. Fontaine. The SQT training was given by Sgt. John England on NBC, nuclear, biological and chemical warfare. He lectured on the capabilities of the U.S. versus the Soviet Union in this type of warfare. The men viewed films and practiced putting their M-17 masks on in the required 9 seconds time limit. The company's three officers, Lts. Fisher, Hoyt and Wright traveled to American Fork to attend training and receive instruction for this year's summer camp. In the afternoon Sgt. Vearl Tucker gave an SQT class on the LAW, light anti-tank weapon. He discussed this weapon's capabilities and destructive fire power. Firing at stationary and moving targets was discussed. Films and training aids were used to help the men judge distance and speed of enemy tanks. Recruiting is still going on this month.
