The win delivers a first place mark of 3-0 3-0 to the Hawks and places the 2-1 Mites in second place. Vernal's Hawks jumped out quickly to a 6-0 lead due to two field goals by Mike Lance and a two-pointer by Alec Clark. The Mites gained their first points late in the first quarter on a field goal by Derick Adams. The score at the end of the first quarter was: Hawks, 6 and Mites, 2. The Mites narrowed the Hawks' lead to 6 to 4 when Darren Wilde fired in two free throws. The Hawks didn't put in any field goals in the second quarter, but free throws by David Merino and Alec Clark gave the Hawks a 9 to 4 lead at the end of the first half. Alec Clark nabbed the ball after the second half jumpball and flipped in a layup for the Hawks. A few seconds later Mike Lance stole the ball and drove in for a two-pointer, which gave the Hawks a 13 to 4 lead. Vernal's Mites gained their first field goal in the third quarter when Darren Wilde connected on a two-pointer. Mike Lance countered the field goal by Wilde with a field goal of his own, but the Mites came right back as Mark Hacking fired in a two-pointer. The Hawks' Alec Clark put in two free throws and Mike Lance fired in his third field goal of the third quarter for a 19-8 lead. Seth Norwood of the Mites flipped in a two-pointer to make the score at the end of the third quarter, Hawks, 19 and Mites, 10. Mike Lance fired in a two-pointer early in the fourth quarter to give the Hawks a 21 to 10 lead, but Derick Adams of the Mites hit two outside bombs in a row to cut the Hawks' lead to 21 to 14. Lance put in the final field goal of the game to make the final score: Hawks, 23 and Mites, 14. The top scorer in the game was Mike Lance of the Hawks with 14 points on Afield goa.s.
