Show II' II I I HI " IMIIIIUII , Uintah High School, the 1980 3-A State champions toppled the state champion from Wyoming, twice, and thumped the third place winner, three times, during the 1979-80 wrestling season. Rock Springs Spr-ings captured first place in the 1980 Class AA State Wrestling Tournament in Rock Springs last month when they edged Casper Natrona by four points, .149 to 145. Green River, Wyoming, the defending state champion, placed third at 110 points. Riverton njaced fourth at 54 points and Cheyenne Central nabbed fifth place at 48' points. Wrestlers, fans and coaches encountered en-countered wild action in the Class AA State Wrestling Tournament in Wyoming. Wyom-ing. The final match of the tournament between heavyweight wrestlers, Fred Bath of Rock Springs and Frisby of Riverton, decided the first place winner in the team division of the tournament. "Rock Springs was behind Casper Natrona in the battle for first place by half a point, and Fred Bath's 11-2 win over Frisby gave Rock Springs the title," stated Terry Meador, a teacher at Rock Springs East Junior High. Rock Springs had four first place champions in the state tournament. Bobby Hower, 112, toppled Gary Dallman of Green River, 8-4, for first place. Bimbo Chick, 119, thumped Brad Heuer of Sheridan for first place. Steve Knezovich, 132, downed Sam Robles, Green River, 4-1, for first place. Fred Bath toppled Frisby of Riverton for first place. Ron Stassinos, 138; Niki McCulley, 145 and Brian Ashmore, 155, captured second place titles for Rock Springs. Stassinos was defeated by Mike Reamer of Natrona and McCulley was thumped by Scott Chipperfield of Rawlins. Brian Ashmore was defeated by Doug Cozzens, Powell. Cookie Hower. 105, placed third. Green River, Wyoming, had two tusslers, Bill Hodges, 126 and Dan Arguello, 105, collect first place titles. Gary Dallman, 112; Sam Robles, 132 and Steve Miller, 167, placed second. Steve Ortega, 98, placed third and Mike Hamel, 138; Mike Beck, 155, nabbed fourth places. Hodges defeated Hermillo Gonzales of Natrona in the finals, 4-2, in overtime and finished with a perfect record of 27-0. Arguello defeated Pat Jurado of Rawlins in overtime for the 105 pound crown. Steve Miller was downed by Ab Brown, Natrona, in the 167 pound championship cham-pionship match, 12-1. The L'intah L'tes defeated .Rock Springs, Spr-ings, the 1980 state champions, in a dual meet, 25 to 22 in Rock Springs December 5, and toppled the Wyoming team, 135 to 134, for first place in the Vernal Tournament of Champions on January 4 and 5. Matt Hacking, who placed third in the I'tah Class 3-A State Tournament, nipped nip-ped second placer in Wyoming. Ron Stassinos, 6-5, in the dual meet. Randy Smuin, l'intah, second placer at the state tournament, toppled second placer, Niki McCulley, 9-5. Monte Morris. Mor-ris. L'intah, thumpod third placer. Cookie Hower, 8-3. One point enabled L'intah to defeat Rock Springs in the Vernal Tournament of Champions. The L'tes' Matt Hacking placed first in the tournament when he nipped Ron Stassinos in overtime due to a referee's decision. Brett Brown, Uintah Uin-tah downed Uintah's Josh Reynolds, 7-2, for first place, and Ron Horrocks, 105, edged Skyline, Utah's Gary Robbins, Rob-bins, 8 7 for first place. Ken Cobbs downed Fred Bath in the finals in the Rock Springs Tournament, December 14 and 15, 4 to 3. Matt Hacking Hack-ing was defeated by Ron Stassinos, 7-2, in the battle for first place. Hacking improved im-proved his record to 3-1 in matches with Stassinos when he thumped the Wyoming Wyom-ing tussler in the Green River Tournament Tourna-ment on January 25 and 26 by the score of 2-0. The Uintah Utes defeated Gret-n River Wyoming three times during the past season. Uintah thumped Green River in the Rock Springs Tournament and in the Vernal Tournament of Champions. Cham-pions. The Utes downed Green River in a dual meet in Vernal on February 1, 37 to 15. Ron Horrocks, who placed fourth for Uintah at 105 pounds in the 1!W0 Class 3-A State Tournament, toppled Sieve Ortega, who placed third at !H pounds for Green River. Foslon Chivers, Uintah's Uin-tah's 112 pounder, who placed fifth at the state tournament, defeated second placer in Wyoming, Gary Dallman, 11-2. Matt Hacking, Uintah, downed Mike Hamel, 4 2. Hamel placed fourth in the Wyoming State Tournament. Kay Smuin, Uintah, blanked Mike Heck, 2 0, and edged Beck, 2 1, in overtime in the Vernal Tournament of Champions. Heck placed fourth. Sieve Miller, 167, captured second place in the Wyoming Stale Tournament, but he was tied by Billy Bedell of Uintah, 2 2. The Uintah Ules defeated the slate champion from Rock Springs, Wyoming, Wyom-ing, in n dual meet and a tournament tied the 1979 champs from Meeker and toppled Nampa, the 1979 first place winner win-ner from Idaho, in the Vernal Tournament Tourna-ment of Champions during the season. |
