Show I I 3fflElSWiE5 1 I I I I Make Mom A Meal By DONETA GATHERUM One of the best presents a Mother could receive next Sunday is a good home-cooked meal that she didn't have to prepare. Even the youngest child can help prepare pre-pare a special Mother's Day meal if things are planned in advance. FIRST, DECIDE on a simple menu. Stuffed celery, a gelatin molded salad, baked potatoes, hamburger patties pat-ties cooked in an oven, canned or frozen vegetables and a simple ice cream and cookie dessert would certainly be pleasing to most moms. Before you cook, wash your hands. Other important preparation steps include reading the recipe or directions direc-tions carefully and all the way through. Get out everything every-thing you need before you start. Wear an apron to keep your clothing clean. START WITH the gelatin molded salad. This should be prepared the night before it is to be served so the salad will be properly set. Prepare the flavored gelatin according to the simple package directions. Substitute fruit juice for half the water if possible. You might want to add grated carrots and drained crushed pineapple to lemon or orange-flavored gelatin. This is called "sunshine "sun-shine salad." Diced apples, oranges, pineapple tidbits, bananas and broken walnuts taste good in lemon or banana-flavored gelatin. Pitted cherries, sliced celery and chopped nuts taste good when added to gelatin. Stuffed celery is a popular appetizer. Cut the celery in small lengths. Wash carefully. Fill the centers with creamed cheese or peanut butter. Top with raisins, nuts or cherry pieces. Place in the fridge for a few minutes before serving. BAKED potatoes and hamburgers are cooked in the oven. Wash the potato and dry it. Get the oven ready by having an adult or an older child set the temperature at 400 degrees. Punch some holes in the potato w ith a fork. Put the potato in the oven and let it bake for one hour. Be careful w hen your remove the potato from the oven. Use a pot holder. Hamburger can be cooked in the oven w hile the potatoes pota-toes are baking. Put them in 40 minutes after the potatoes. pota-toes. To prepare hamburger for baking, make a ball of the meat. Put the ball on a baking sheet . Pat it down until it is flat. Place the hamburger-covered baking sheet in the oven. Cook for 20 minutes. IT IS easy to make an ice cream dessert. Crush 5 graham crackers in a plastic bag. Pour the crumbs into a bowl. Pour one tablespoon of sugar into the bowl and stir. Take on tablespoon of soft butter or margarine. Put it on top of the crumbs. Stir with a fork. Place the crumb crust in the bottom of a pie plate. Fill the pie plate with softened ice cream. Top with cherries, nuts, crushed candy pieces or whipped cream. Freeze until firm. Finish the meal with a chocolate drop quick cookie. CHOCOLATE DROP QUICKIES 2 cups sugar ': cup butter ': cup cocoa V; cup milk 3 cups quick-cooking rolled oats Vi cup chopped nuts 1 tsp. vanilla MIX SUGAR, butter, cocoa and milk in saucepan. Bring to boil quickly. Reduce heat and boil 3 or 4 minutes mi-nutes or until a little dropped into cold water forms a soft ball (234 degrees). Remove from heat: stir in rolled oats, nuts, vanilla. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper; let stand until hardened. Store in refrigerator, if desired. Makes about 3 dozen. After the meal is prepared, make sure the oven and the stove burners are turned off. Clean up the utensils you used to prepare the meal. Put every thing away.
