K-y-- ' i . is'. :. i .; : i- ... . ... . - ' . : I u GUEST SKATER Paul Wylie, 1981 Junior Men's National and World Champion, will be a guest skater at the. annual ice show sponsored by the Utah Figure Skating Club May 5, 6 and 7 at Bountiful Ice Rink. "Newspaper Capers," a musical-on-ice, in costume and full color, will be presented pre-sented May 5, 6, 7 at the Bountiful Boun-tiful Ice Arena by the Utah Figure Fi-gure Skating Club. The UFSC ice show is an annual event which traditionally features nationally known competitors as guest stars, several local soloists, and a cast of approximately approxi-mately 125 area skaters, from learn-to-skate tots to senior adults. THEMES FOR this year's production are drawn from the daily papers and range from the antics of comic strip characters char-acters to those of the international interna-tional news headline makers. The show is endorsed and sanctioned by the United States Figure Skating Association. Associa-tion. Guest stars are Jill Frost and Paul Wylie, both intense competitors com-petitors and well known in national na-tional and international skating skat-ing circles. Ms. Frost was junior ladies national champion cham-pion in 1981. In 1982 she moved into the senior ladies division and placed second in an international competition at St. Gervais, France. Continuing Con-tinuing into the 1983 skate-offs, skate-offs, she placed second in the eastern states championships and competed in the '83 Nationals Na-tionals at Pittsburgh. : MR. WYLIE was junior men's national champion in : 1981, then went on to become world champion that same year. In 1982 he was senior men's midwestern champion. In 1983 competition, he placed fifth in the National Championships Cham-pionships at Pittsburgh. UFSC soloists for "Newspaper "News-paper Capers" are: Jana Blackburn, Holly Cook, Christi Cozzens, Kim Peck, and Merrilee Rowland, all Bountiful; Kenna Bailey and Jon Jackson, Centerville; Kir-sten Kir-sten Novak, Layton; Virginia Hugoe, West Bountiful; Jeff Wassom, North Salt Lake; and Janet Nate and Kathy Searle, Salt Lake City. ALL OF these skaters were required to meet a minimum standard to qualify for their solo roles. Most are well known in western skating circles cir-cles and regularly come home sporting new gold, silver, and bronze awards earned in various va-rious figure skating competitions competi-tions conducted throughout the western states. Show director for "Newspaper "News-paper Capers" is Doree Ann Takeoka, Riverton, a member of the professional staff at the Bountiful rink. This is Ms. Tateoka's fourth consecutive year in this capacity. Her three previous annual productions, all well attended and acclaimed by the skating public, pub-lic, were: "Broadway Magic," "Follow Your Dreams," and "Celebrate America." MS. TATEOKA is being assisted with the choreography choreogra-phy and arrangements by several sev-eral other members of the rink's professional staff; and with costumes, music, props, and other essentials by club members and parents of the skaters. Paul Graham, North Salt Lake, 295-6803, is chairman in charge of ticket sales. Admission Admis-sion prices at the door are set at $4 for adults and $2 for children. chil-dren. Prices, if tickets are purchased pur-chased in advance, are $3.50 and $1.75. UFSC is a nonprofit non-profit organization, and any proceeds from the show will be sed to help promote amateur figure skating in Utah. Four performances will be presented, pre-sented, three in the evenings plus a Saturday matinee. Curtain Cur-tain time for the evening shows is 7:30 p.m., for the matinee, 2 p.m. . CONCURRENTLY with the rehearsals and other preparations prepara-tions for "Newspaper Capers," Cap-ers," UFSC members are also deeply involved with plans for two other major skating events: the annual Copper Cup Competition to be held at the Bountiful rink in mid-July, and which regularly draws skaters from throughout the western states; and the '84 National Championships, which will be held at the Salt Place in mid-January. mid-January.
