Show Published Her Own Books By CHERIE HUBER Ask any writer who has ever published a book, they'll tell you it's a struggle to get into print. One very young author though, took matters into her own hands. She wrote stories, cut up paper into book size sheets, printed and illustrated the stories by hand. Then she took the books door to door to the neighbors. She still remembers remem-bers the pleasure she felt when two elderly neighbor ladies bought her books. That little girls who learned to read before be-fore kindergarten so she could write her own books, has grown up now and has eight daughters of her own. She is also still writing. "SPIRITUALLY Centered Motherhood" written by Sher-rie Sher-rie Johnson and published by Bookcraft will be the May LDS Book Club Selection. The book, which came out the first of April, is Mrs. Johnson's John-son's first book. She has also had more than 60 articles published pub-lished by the "Friend," "New Era," "Ensign" and other prominent magazines. SIX YEARS ago she began to feel that something was missing mis-sing in all the child development develop-ment texts she studied to help her rais her children. She also felt that parents would not be blessed with children without also being blessed with the directions to raise those children chil-dren to be successful adults. She also reasoned that those directions would be found in the Scriptures. So she began to ' I 1 - '' ?' ,4-, - J- SHERRIE JOHNSON carefully comb the scriptures for ideas and directions on raising children. Then someone mentioned that in reading the section in the Book of Mormon about King Benjamin speaking to his people, he had found six principles prin-ciples to change lives. He wouldn't tell her what steps he had found but told her to find them herself by studying that section. AFTER SIX months of study, he felt that she had found eight steps. Those eight steps became the basis of "Spiritually Centered Motherhood." Mother-hood." Those eight steps are backed back-ed up with ideas that she has gleaned from many sources including in-cluding other mothers and teachers and her experiences with her own family, it tooK five years to research and compile com-pile the material. IN RAISING her own family, fami-ly, Mrs. Johnson uses one of the eight steps each month. She finds that she can reinforce rein-force that idea with mini-lessons mini-lessons while she cooks and cleans. Then a large bulletin board in the dining room holds pictures that reminds the family fami-ly of the lessons they are learning. learn-ing. When the eight steps are completed the family begins with the first one again. Sherrie Johnson lives in West Bountiful and is married to Carl Johnson, a Church Publication Coordinator for the LDS Church. She is the oldest of five daughters of Ivo and Geraldine Mills of Centerville. |
