Show PREP TRACK Vikes Injured At EYU Invitational By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports : 1- VIEWMONT - Viewmont track coach isn't as concerned over the fact that his team didn't win the team title at BYU oyer the weekend as he is about the little nagging injuries his athletes are coming up with. "REALLY WHEN you consider the kids we didn't use and we were still only 20 points out of the race for the title we did fairly well." The Vikings got their points from a first place effort in the javelin from senior Scott Hubbard and a third in the same event by another senior Mark Law. Kevin Smith, known more for his pitching pitch-ing in baseball, went to the meet and finished in third place in the long jump while Dave Chowen faired well in the hurdles. Dave placed third, and set a new school record, in the intermediate inter-mediate hurdles and then placed fourth, which was the highest 4A finish, in the high hurdles. Then we turn the attention to the injury roll call. First of all his two sprinters, Jon Warner and Kurt Mathews, had both qualified for the finals of the 100 and the 200. Both came up lame during the 100 finals, which hampered their efforts in that race. Warner was completely com-pletely scratched from the 200 while Mathews dropped out right after the start with a sore muscle cramp. Add to this the fact that R.J. Lunt, who has picked up points in both the sprint relay and the long jump, didn't compete in this meet with a sore right leg. "We'll just have to wait and see about those injuries. Warner War-ner has a pulled groin and Mathews a hamstring ham-string problem. I think both will be alright but maybe not for this week." THIS WEEK refers to the Davis Invitational which attracts all the 4A schools in the state. Many coaches use this meet as a gauge for the upcoming state event. "We'lljust have to evaluate eva-luate this week as far as the injuries are concerned. con-cerned. We won't use anyone that is still hurting, hurt-ing, we want them to get better for the region meet the following week and then state" DuBois noted. Back to the BYU meet a couple of things happened that didn't really thrill the Viking headman. It seems that the sprint relay team, thrown together at the last minute, of Bill Vanotti, Kurt Mathews, Doug Scovil and Dave Chosen placed third but received word they were disqualified. "I guess what happened was that when Dave crossed the finish line he tossed tos-sed the baton up in the air and tried to catch it, he didn't. No one said anything to him or me until we read on the official sheet we had been disqualified. The rule is to prevent a runner from throwing the baton down in disgust, which we didn't but those are the breaks." THEN IN THE mile run Mike Allen of Viewmont View-mont placed tenth, but his time should have qualified him for the state meet but the BYU officials had only made provisions to time the top nine runners. "We wanted to qualify him for state in this event and we did but they didn't officially time him. I made a stink and for the two mile race they made sure they had enough timers to get anyone that finished under the qualifying time." This week is a big one for the Vikes and the other schools in the area. First on Tuesday was the Davis County Clipper City championships at Viewmont and then on Friday and Saturday comes the Davis Invitational. VIEWMONT IS still favored in the city meet but they'll need a full squad to win at the Davis meet. Only time will tell if they field their full team. |
