THAT WIN leaves both clubs even in region action with 6-4 records. East has the region title in their pocket with a 7-2 record while the big story is Highland. The Rams, who current-' current-' 1 ly have a 5-4 record, were scheduled to play 1 . East this week. Should East win then the m' 1 . Leopards, Vikings and Wildcats would be in-' in-' volved in state play with East getting the auto-( auto-( 1 matic berth while the two local sides would face playoff games with another region. ! However the big question is what happens if ' Highland wins. Well that would still leave East in first place and in the tournament. But it I would also mean that Highland, Viewmont and j Woods Cross would be tied for second place 395' I and since only two of the three would be in-volved in-volved in playoffs with another region one can I assume that they would have playoff games I with each other prior to that. "THAT COULD kill some of the teams as far as pitchers are concerned" noted Vike coach John Edwards, "it's conceivable a team could play three games in four or three days." ) VIEWMONT 5 WOODS CROSS 3. The tension must have got to some of the players since Viewmont took an early 3-0 lead without the aid of a single hit. Some walks, errors and passed balls were the results of this three run lead. VIEWMONT DID finally help their own cause with some timely hitting, from Danny 1 Hansen and Quinn Hepworth, but the big blow ' was a towering double by Doug Lee. Kurt Mathews was on the mount for the Vikes and he went six innings and then had to get some relief help from senior Jarren Pack. Mathews ran into trouble in the seventh when pinch hitter Curtis Carman stroked a double and then Mathews loaded the bases with a couple of walks. AT THIS TIME Coach John Edwards called on the lefthanded Pack who got the hitters to fly out. Two runs scored with sacrifice flies but 1 the Vikes had some runs to give. '--It I Bountiful started six sophmores which allowed Viewmont to gamble and win. WOODS CROSS 8 HIGHLAND 7 This was a different game right from the outset. Highland came up in the top of the first and simply started banging out hit after hit and by the time the Cats could get them out they had sent five runners across the plate. But then the Cats did the exact same thing and got right back into the battle in the bottom of the first. BOTH STARTING pitchers then settled down a little and for three innings the score was tied at 7-7. Then in the bottom of the seventh the home Wildcats went to work. Danny Fred-rikson Fred-rikson hit a long fly ball which the outfielder couldn't handle and ended up at third base. Highland then elected to put Race McCleery on first and pitch to Troy Fuller. The strategy didn't work as Fuller singled up the middle to drive in the winning run. It was also Troy, who went in relief of Mike Dally, that picked up the pitching victory. EAST 2 WOODS CROSS 1 For all purposes many felt this game was for the region title and two great pitchers locked horns in a classic matchup. Curtis Carman went the distance for the Cats giving up seven hits and striking out 9 while Edwards of East also gave up seven hits and struck out 10 Wildcat Wild-cat hitters. WOODS CROSS scored first in the top of the second. Region baseball concluded this week with Viewmont and Woods Cross still in the hunt for a state berth. double but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the single by Kevin Ostler. Ostler took second on the throw and he then scored on a double by Darren Thompson. East came up with their two runs in the bottom of the third and then held on for the win. It was the first loss for Carman in region action. VIEWMONT 8 DAVIS 1 The Vikes realized they had to win this game to keep any state hopes alive and they came up with a big effort. Kurt Mathews went the full seven innings giving up only two hits. Offensively Offen-sively the Vikes got great efforts from Steve Caputo, who was three for four, and Kevin Smith who finished two for three at the plate. THE VIKES picked up three in the third with the aid of several bases loaded walks by Davis pitchers and then three more in the fourth with a couple of sacrifice flies and a solid single by Smith. VIEWMONT 4 BOUNTIFUL 2 The Vikings built up a 4-0 lead and then hung on to take this big region win for them in an effort to keep alive in the hunt for a state berth. Caputo opened up with a walk and moved to third on a single by Doug Lee, he then scored on a sacrifice fly by Quinn Hepworth. They added to that 1-0 lead in the fifth w hen back to back singles by Danny Hansen and Doug Lee each drove in a run giving the Vikes a 3-0 advantage. THE VIKES made it 4-0 in the top of the sixth with the aid of a Brave error but then the Bountiful offense got untracked. Bruce Riddle doubled as did Tim Smith, then the Braves scored again on a fielders choice by Craig Smith. The Braves also put up a threat in the bottom of the seventh but the game ended with Eric Johnson hitting a long ball to center-fielder Doug Lee who was playing back. "WE PLAYED six sophomores, three juniors and a couple of seniors and I thought we played well" noted Bountiful coach Phil 01 sen. Kevin Smith threw the first five innings and got the win for the Vikings with Jarren Pack getting to work the final two innings. Eric Johnson, who took the loss, went four for Bountiful with Mike Nuterboom and Robby Thompson going the final three. EAST 6 BOUNTIFUL 3 Again the Bountiful club threw a young club into the fire, they are certainly getting some valuable playing experience for the future. Junior Randy Upton and sophomore Mike Nuterboom worked the pitching duties for the Braves while Chris Jacobs doubled, Eric Johnson John-son doubled and Craig Smith had a couple of hits on offense. |
