Discussion series to examine importance of books The Park City Library is offering a provocative three-week three-week senes examining the importance of books and reading in our lives. The series will be held on consecutive Wednesdays, Wed-nesdays, Oct. 5, 12 and 19 at 7 p.m. In the opening discussion, Ivy Ruckman, one of Utah's most widely published authors of books for young people, will share her insights about the creative process of writing. Ms. Ruckman is the author of: Melba the Brain; Encounter; What's An Average Kid Like Me Doing Way Up Here? In A Class By Herself; and The Hunger Scream. On Oct. 12, two specialists from the Salt Lake County library system will discuss choosing books for children. Practical and imaginative suggestions will be provided to help children discover the joy of reading. On Oct. 19, Pete J. Giacoma, coordinator of Young Readers' Services at the Davis County Library, will focus on "Reading in Crisis: Can the book compete with computers?" There is no admission charge to any of the discussions. High School Community Council meeting All interested parents of high school students are invited to attend the season's first High School Community Council meeting at the high school library, Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Agenda items regarding concerns or issues which should be discussed can be called to Dan Hunter, 649-9705. ( 929) Rezone hearing The Park City Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Oct. 12, beginning at 7:30 p.m., in the Marsac Building for public input on the proposed rezoning of property proper-ty located adjacent to Bonanza Drive and Iron Horse Drive. The request, on behalf of Broadhead and Lee Investment, is to rezone property from Light Industrial (LI) to General Commercial (GO. Also to be discussed is the rezoning options for Park Avenue between Heber Avenue and 11th Street. ( 106) Memorial Building hours Fall is finally here and with the change of the seasons, the Recreation Department has a new schedule. Memorial Building hours are Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Beginning in October, the building will be open on Saturdays. Call 649-9461 for further information. Muckers plan season farewell The Park City rugby team will be holding an end-of-the-season party in Smith Morehouse Canyon from noon Saturday, Satur-day, Oct. 1 to noon Sunday, Oct. 2. Beer, music, food, and camping space will be provided. Details next week. (922) Counseling help for low-income The Park City Family Counseling Institute is now offering counseling services for low-income singles, couples and families in Summit and Wasatch counties. All age groups are eligible. Fees are determined on a sliding fee scale based on income. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the 1984 Utah Winter Special Olympics. Entry fee is $50 per team. Entry deadline is Oct. 31. Applications are now available at Park Meadows Country Club. ( 1027) Balloon photo contest The ChamberBureau's "Autumn Aloft" photo contest, for the best photograph which captures the event, is on! Members Mem-bers should try to get their photosslides processed and to the ChamberBureau office by Oct. 3, 1983. All entries for the contest must be submitted to the ChamberBureau office no later than Friday, Oct. 7, 1983. The photos will be judged by the ChamberBureau staff and Pat McDowell. The winner will receive $100 off hisher 1984 ChamberBureau membership, and the photo will probably be used on a poster, in brochures and future promotions regarding "Autumn Aloft". (922) Program on European . : , nuclear debate The growing controversy over nuclear weapons in Europe will be discussed Wednesday evening, Sept. 28, at the Main Library in Salt Lake City. Beginning stained glass starts Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 7 to 10 p.m. Etching and chipping, an advanced class, begins Thursday, Oct. 6 from 7 to 10 p.m. Registration is open to anyone over the age of nine. Tuition for each class is $45 for Kimball Art Center members mem-bers and $50 for nonmembers. Beginning through advanced classes will be offered for students ages five and older. Kindernastics will be offered for students from three to five years old. (922) Basic photography Park Record photographer Nan Chalat will teach a basic photography class at the Kimball Art Center beginning Thursday, Thurs-day, Oct. 20. The course will meet every Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. through Nov. 24. According to the instructor, the course will deal with basic black and white photography and darkroom techniques. Students must provide their own 35 mm cameras. Cost for the course is $50 for Kimball Art Center members and $55 for nonmembers. (922) University of Utah classes University of Utah Division of Continuing Education courses cour-ses will once again be offered at Kimball Art Center this fall quarter. Courses to be offered include such diverse areas as accounting, art history, art, English, French, health education, marketing, math and psychology. According to Alan Seko, associate program director of the Park CityUniversity of Utah program for higher education, all of the courses are scheduled in the evening. Students have the option of taking most of the courses for college credit or for noncredit, with noncredit tuition being less than regular tuition. The University of Utah's recent closure on admissions does not affect Park City courses, Seko said. "Students interested in taking college courses in Park City may still register for any of the classes listed in the Park City class edition, he said.
