Could be that by the time this gets printed we'll wake up to our first snowfall of the year. It always is interesting to see how the fall and winter are going to develop. We've barely got colored leaves this year and now we're expecting snow. Doesn't seem right, especially if it lingers. Those days of bright leaves and warm, sunny days are some of the best of any year. What a pity if a bona fide snowstorm comes along and turns everything into white and brown and mud without the transition. But autumn fishing gets good with or without cooperation from the weather. It helps the fisherman's mood if he can get out on a pretty day, but good fishing has been known to perk up a fisherman's mood, too. Charlee Barnes of Anglers Inn said that in the past couple of weeks the fishing out at Strawberry and Soldier Creek Reservoirs has really begun to pick up. "The fish are working in the weed beds in the shallow water near shore for chub minnows," he said. BSBBDBBBBBBBBBBB Barnes advised using woolly worm or streamer patterns; a streamer fly known as the "Stayner Ducktail" is producing quite well at this time. Fish up to three and one-half pounds are being caught, with two- to three-pound three-pound fish not unusual. "At Soldier Creek I like to fish in the top end of the lake," said Barnes, "in the newly-flooded newly-flooded water that is up to four feet deep. The weeds haven't had a chance to grow up much yet, but the fish are in there because there is a lot of food. A float tube is a real good way to cover a lot of water, although it is wadeable because the bottom hasn't become mucky yet." At Rockport Barnes anticipates the yearly schooling of spawner brown trout in the channel at the inlet of the Weber River. "Any minnow imitation will work," Barnes said. "If I were a spin fisherman, I'd go with a bubble and a fly rather than the hardware." So there you are. Don't let a little nippy weather nip your chances of taking a trophy fish this fall. Remember, a little nip of internal inter-nal antifreeze has been known to make a cold weather outing a little more tolerable, regardless of the day. |
