Show Sailplane overshoots landing Sailplane pilot John Mil-don Mil-don was injured while trying to land his craft as part of an Autumn Aloft demonstration Sunday afternoon. It was the only accident to occur at the balloon festival. Mildon, who is a sailplane flight instructor in Salt Lake City, overshot the" landing area on the 18th fairway of the Park Meadows Golf Course. He attempted to make a sharp U-turn on the fairway, but the aircraft stalled and snagged a wing on the rough terrain just beyond the fairway. While the spectators held their breath, the glider slammed into the ground and bounced, but remained upright. EMTs on the scene rushed in to check on Mildon, who complained com-plained of serious back pains. He was immediately immobilized with a Ken-drick Ken-drick Extraction device, and after a slight delay while the ambulance was jump-started, jump-started, he was transported to the Park City Family Health Clinic and then to Holy Cross Hospital for observation. He was released re-leased the same day and has since reported to Autumn Aloft organizers Gene Moser and Fred Birch that he is all right. |
