Show decision on purchasing equipment than we had originally intended or wished; however, it resulted in getting ' computers into the schools by the beginning of the year. We all felt comfortable com-fortable with the end result, but it may be a year or so before we know . whether buying more Apples was the most prudent decision. I 3. Park City is fortunate to have many dedicated teachers in the schools. Moose Smith worked very hard this summer to get the high school com-" puter lab in place," to investigate equipment and prices, and to set up his curriculum for the year. He and Maggie Haun have done a superb job over the past two or more years to introduce in-troduce computer classes into the high school. Middle school teachers were also using their time off to prepare for upcoming classes. In August I personally per-sonally consulted with both Sam Sevier and Sharon Richards, who are using the computers in their classes this year. Also, the middle school administration- arranged for a class through the University of Utah last, year. At least half of their teachers spent their own time and money to learn how to use and program the computers that the school had purchased. pur-chased. It is unfair to imply that the high school is alone in its effort to prepare for the use of computers in its curriculum. Park City is a small school district ' and it is important that we all work together toward the common goal of providing a quality education for our children, regardless of who gets the credit for any particular step in that direction. I am optimistic that this can finally happen under the expert ; tutelage of our new superintendent, Dr. Tony Mitchell, but we all must; help. I think your newspaper should be commended for excellent coverage of school issues in general, and particularly par-ticularly for your interesting article on a fine middle school program. Nan Chalat has worked her beat very well indeed. I also feel compelled to clarify several issues that were raised in that letter: 1. The computer committee consisted con-sisted of teachers from each of the three Park City schools and three parents. Dr. Dozier did not participate except to provide any support and information in-formation that we needed. The middle school representative, San Sevier, attended at-tended three of the four meetings that led up to a recommendation on equipment equip-ment to be purchased this year. Mr. Yager was only able to attend one of the meetings that Sam did and possibly was not aware of his contributions. I might also add that Sam had an evening job this summer, and his attendance at-tendance resulted in some personal financial sacrifice. 2. The middle school did .have" a program planned for computer Jusagft.. this year, although they had decided to implement it on a limited basis until they knew how many computers they would receive. The high school took a more aggressive posture and allowed students to sign up for computer classes despite uncertainty about hardware hard-ware availability. This forced the committee to make a more hasty |
