Show Racquet Club hosts region tennis tourney The Park City High School girls' tennis team has the home-court advantage today as the Region 11 championships champion-ships are held at the Park Meadows Racquet Club. Based on their record against the three other tennis schools in the region, the Miners must be considered con-sidered the favorite for the team title. The Miners have beaten each of the three St. Joseph, Rowland Hall and South Summit in head-to-head competition, completing complet-ing the sweep Sept. 15 by knocking off Rowland Hall 4-1. In addition to determining the region team title, today's tournament will also determine deter-mine which players will advance to the state 1A-2A championships at Brigham Young University. According Accord-ing to Park City Coach Maggie Haun, the top two players in each event will qualify for state. Here are the results of the Sept. 15 match between Park City and Rowland Hall. In each event, Park City players and scores are listed first. In number one singles, Stefanie Elkins defeated Kristina Obermann, 6-1, 6-2. In number two singles, Lesley Rukavina defeated Dani Hogle, 6-2, 6-0. In number three singles, Kris Ruzicka defeated Diane Knowles, 6-4, 6-1. In number one doubles, Stephanie Holcomb and CoriAnn Martinez defeated Erika Reddick and Jenny Clark, 6-1, 6-0. In number two doubles,' Katherine Carry and Becky Smith lost to Liz McComber and Leslie deBrier, 6-1, 4-6, 6-7. The Miners also tuned up for the region tournament by playing Wasatch, traditionally tradi-tionally a power in2A tennis, Tuesday , in Park City. By winning two of the three singles matches and splitting split-ting the doubles matches, the Miners came away with a 3-2 victory in this non-league non-league contest. Here are those results. In number one singles, Stefanie Elkins defeated Sherie North, 6-1, 6-1. In number two singles, Holly Scott lost to Betty Jo Smedley, 6-2, 3-6, 3-6. In number three singles, Kris Ruzicka defeated Toni DeFriez, 6-4, 6-0. In number one doubles, CoriAnn Martinez and Stephanie Holcomb defeated Arlene Patterson and Kelly Huddleston, 6-4, 6-4. In number two doubles, Katherine Carry and Becky Smith lost to Holly Smith and Marie Smedley, 5-7, 7-6, 3-6. Going into today's tourna- L. ment, the Miners have a 3-0 record against league opponents, op-ponents, 1-1 against non-league non-league opponents. Their only loss has come at the hands of Grantsville, five-time defending de-fending 1A-2A state champions cham-pions in girls' tennis. |
