Carl Peterson Named Coach fice Tigers During IW-ll Seasons "Stubby" Will Take Reins in the Fall and Promises Fans Fast Grid Team; Is Wonderful Athlete Carl "Stubby" Peterson, ono of tho greatest 'athletes ever developed in Utah, will handle the montorshlp at the Ogdcn high school during tho 1020 and 1021 seasons. Peterson signed his contract In Salt Lake yesterday yes-terday and will report to the Tiger; lair durlntr tho fall. In securing the services of peter-j son, Superintendent Karl Hopkins se-I se-I cured ono of the best coaches in the 'state to handlo the athletes at the local school.. Peterson has a great record as an athlete and during thej present school year whipped a teamj into shape at Bingham which finished ( i second to the Davis high school In thej Estate Intcrscholastlc hoop tilts at Salt) i Lake. i Peterson startod ills athletic career jat the West high school in 1913 upder Coach Henry Richardson. Ho was a member of the track squad during that season and made a fair showing. When the East' high school opened in 114 Tetorsou cast his lot with the i Leopards and under Fltzpatrick proved the class of the hich school quarterbacks on the gridiron. Ho was the choice of four of five sport writers for the all-state pcaition on the grid machine. In track and field he took an active part but showed his real class while at the Utah .Aggie lair. While at the Leopard school he also starred in baseball, being an outfielder. out-fielder. On leaving tho East high. "Stubby" entered the Utah Agricultural Agricul-tural collcg at Logan and played three years on the '"A", grid machine, alternating al-ternating at quarterback and half-' half-' back. Ho was a member of the championship cham-pionship team of 1017, starring with Stlofcl in the back field. "Stubby" was known from one end of the Rocky mountain conference and despite his smallncss he proved to bo one of the mainstays of tho lAggU team during the three years that he played college football. WlnS Conference Honors In 1017'he was named by two Denver Den-ver scribes on the all-Conference team, bolr.g placed in tho back field. During Dur-ing that sea.on, Mose Stiefet won the all-star generalship position. Stlefel and Peterson were termed the class of the Aggie team. ' Stubby" was a member of tho track and field team at ,tho Aggie school for three years being a sprinter and a hurdler. Ho was one of the mainstays of the track team. At Provo last spring in his final meet he topped off his intercolleglato career by winning tho 100 and 220-yard dash events and also the low hurdles. 113 was also' a member of the fast Agglo relay team. In the low hurdles ho equalled the state Intercolleglato record. rec-ord. For three years he cavorted around in centerfleld on tho Agglo baseball team. lie was termed the "speed" merchant of the fly chasers and was noted as a batter of the Cobb and Speaker type. He was a member of the Logan team, champions of Cache valley last year, where ho was ono of the leacuc'j. leading hitter:; and fielders. Peterson managed the Aggie basketball bas-ketball team one season, and although al-though but a midget and unable to take part against his larger opponents he followed the galne and knows it from every angle. During the coming com-ing baseball season he will hold down tho center field position on the Rex-burg Rex-burg Giants, champlona of Idaho :n 1910. Works With Xotcd Men Peterson has workod under such coaches as Fitzpatrick of Utah, Richardson Rich-ardson of Utah. Lowell Romnuy of Utah, Callahan Of Yale, Pickering of Minnesota. Watson of Illinois. Ofstio of Wisconsin, and Tcetsel of Michigan. Michi-gan. He Is a polished athlete and should bo able to place Ogden to the front I on tho athletic map. Peterson is now mentor at tho Bingham high school. He will succeed Clarence Douglas, who was named athletic coach for thc Tiger school last fall. Douglas will complete his work as mentor at tho school at tho close of the baseball and i track seasons. D. A.
