Mrs. Amanda Aman-da Thonias, defendant in a suit for ?1, 000.000 for nlleged alienation of the affections of Theodore P. Shonts, former for-mer head 'of the Interborough Rapid Transit company, filed an amended answer to the suit oday. She produced pro-duced documentary evidence purporting purport-ing to show Mr. and Mrs. Shonts executed ex-ecuted a private 'separation agreement ! in 1917. The answer alleges the quarrel be-I be-I tween Mr. Shonts and hjs wife, who brought the suit against Mrs. Thomas, residuary legatee under .Mr, Shonts will, arose out of the marriage of Mary Theodore.Shonls, youngest daughter of tho traction magnate, to the Duke decliaulne of France. In a letter alleged to have been written writ-ten to his daughters in Paris, introduced intro-duced in the answer. Mr. Shonts accused ac-cused his wife of "blackmailing methods meth-ods and "a systematic campaign of villification and slnnder, a campaign' o' lies too low and vile for decent pe.o1 pie to repeat." He also attacked Mrs. fchonts' social ambition as "of a character char-acter not in keeping with the ideals of a plain citizen of the United States." He declared his aversion to iorcign alliances." Shortly after Mrs. Shonts began a ouit for separation in 1915, Mrs., fhomas said in her answer, an alienation aliena-tion suit was instituted against Mrs. Thomas. This suit was dropped, she aaid, and Mrs. Shonts signed a release re-lease in which she agreed not to bring , legal action against Mrs. Thomas for any grievance she had at the time. I nn |
