Show s WOMEN ARE CAREFUL AUTDIVIOBILt DRIVERS Discussing the question of careful auto drivers, Manager P. J. O'Carroll of the Pacific-Nash Motor company, very emphatically upholds women. He says that as a rule women are more observing than men and, as a result, more readily sense dangerous situations, situa-tions, which leads immediately to careful care-ful operation of the car. lie says: j "Habitual indulgence in outdoor sports has instilled in many women drivers a selfreliancc and mental poise that proves invaluable when piloting the car through traffic." explains O'Carroll. "There arc many women whose control at the wheel inspires admiration and often excites envy among the men drivers. . "Any woman who will take the trouble to learn what is going on inside in-side the 'works' of a motor car will become be-come a successful driver. Changing gears is not more difficult for a woman who understands her car than running a sowing machine. From tho beginning, she should bo familiar with each sfep of operation and know exactly ex-actly what is taking place. "The mere act of throwing on tho switch and putting the foot on the starter is not a positive guarantee that the motor will start every time. Once In a while the engine won't start. What Js the matter? "Any number of little things may be holding the explosions up. The successful suc-cessful woman driver should know. She should know just hpw far the spark lever ought to be advanced, how to enrich the mixture without choking tho motor with gasoline, how far to open the throttle so that she will not race the motor unnecessarily; she should know that tho annoying rolling of the motor is caused by a mixture which is too rich. "She should know how to operate the manual controls which are provided provid-ed on most cars for the adjustment ot the carbureter; she should know that If it fires back through the carbureter carbu-reter that she has cut her mixture down too lean; In short, she should be able to determine from tho sound of her motor when it is working efficiently. effi-ciently. Having reached theae points she should be able to throw out her clutch, knowing when the gears haye stopped spinning and able to 'drop into first' without grinding the edge off tho gears. "The fact bf the matter is that many hundreds of women are better drivers than men, and (his in spito of tho fact that many people say the opposite. "Women are learning more rapidly than their brothers ever did and it is not an uncommon sight to see. a woman driving a car now, when a few years ago it was a rarity. oo |
