Show 1 MERCHANTS OF OGDEN DECIDE TO CLOSE 6 P. E SATURDAY; HALF DAY OFF PLAN STILL UP IN AIR While many of the Ogden merchants believe the weekly half-holiday store; closing plan abandoned in favor of ani arrangement whereby all retail stores' will close one hour earlier on Saturdays, Satur-days, a survey taken yesterday brings' forth the fact that others believe that' the matter is still open for decision,! while still others favor the half-day-each-wcok closing and believe this to have been decided upon among the) ! merchants. The misunderstanding appears to J have arisen as the result of two rcso-1 lutions which wore adopted at a meet-j ing of the Retail Merchants' association associa-tion held Friday afternoon. Approximately Approxi-mately twenty-five local merchants were present at the meeting. Two Resolutions. ! One resolution passed at the meet-! ing called for the closing of stores on1 I one afternoon of each week, although1 no' certain day was decided upon, ac-j cording to the report. The second resolution was adopted by a majority vote calling for the closing of stores! I uue iiuui earner un ouiuruuy uiiwr noons, beginning April 17, and abandoning aban-doning the half-day plan. In view of the fact that both resolutions wore approved by the merchants present, it appears that some believe tho passing oi the second resolution to rescind the first, while others believe the first resolution to carry as much authority as the second. E. M. Tower presided at the meeting meet-ing while Samuel Martin was present upon special invitation and spoke in favor of the half-holiday plan. A resolution reso-lution was first presented, calling for the closing of stores at noon Saturdays, Satur-days, but was immediately defeated. An amendment to this resolution' was then introduced by Mr. Martini eliminating the proposal of Saturday afternoon closing, favoring the half-day half-day closing plan byt not specifying any, certain afternoon on which the stores' should be closed. This amendment' wa3 carried with a vote of 19 to G. Meeting Closes. i Iirtiur uui mi, iiit; inceuiio aijuiuei resolution was introduced favoring a plan whereby the stores shall close 'one hour earlier on Saturday after-' after-' noons. Nothing "was mentioned in this j resolution, it was said, in regard to I the rescinding of the previous resolution resolu-tion which had been passed. This sec ond resolution was unanimously indorsed in-dorsed by those present and closed tho meeting. A stirring appeal favoring the half-holiday half-holiday plan was made during the meeting by Mr. Martin, who declared that the adoption of the plan by the I merchants of Ogden will not curtail business, but on the other hand would i promote more efficiency among their employes and inspire a better feeling among the employers and employes.. In part, Mr. Martin said: What Martin Says. "The arguments which are used against the half-holiday closing are very Inconsistent with commercial ex-porience ex-porience and practice of tho past 20 years. "Some objectors complain that to observe ob-serve the weekly half-holiday closing would increase the high cost of living, confusing the Indoor workers of redistribution redis-tribution with the producers, who already al-ready generally observe th3 weekly halfday closing. The difficulties or objections to the weekly half-day clos. ing does not lie in the depreciation of profits to the storekeeper, nor to increase the cost of living to the consumer, con-sumer, but in educating the public to give their orders in earlier on the day before cloain:. "Some complain that the pay is high and the hours of labor too short, yet they have to admit that their profits and turnover with these changed con. ditlons are far greater than they were with the extremely long working houns of a few years back. "Others 3ay that they give an annual holiday on full pay, and cannot see their way clear to agree to a weekly half-day holiday. The vacation is giv-en giv-en as an appreciation of services rendered ren-dered during the year, so that the employe em-ploye may enjoy a well earned re-abut the modern and up to date commercial com-mercial man doe3 not call the weekly balf-day closing a holiday.
