Show Kim Thompson wins Amatuer Golf Tourney Kim Thompson of Cedar City shot a 10 under par 134 to capture the Cedar City Amateur Golf Tournament staged at the Painted Hills Golf Course Saturday and Sunday. Thompson captured the title of the first annual event, co-sponsored by the Cedar City Men's Golfing Association and the Painted Hills Golf Course with an eight stroke margin over second place finisher Gary Esplin of St. George who carded a 142 over the 36 holes of play. Capturing first place in the net division of the championship cham-pionship flight was Kevin Averett of Cedar City with a 129. Steve Judd captured first flight gross honors with a 156 and Fred Wright, Sr. was the net winner in the First flight with a 131. The first annual event drew golfers from as far north as Ogden and as far south as Las Vegas, Nev., according to Golf Pro Gale Parcell, who conducted the tournament activities. Two special prizes were awarded as part of the tournament for being nearest to the hole. Win Young of Cedar City was closest to the hole on the par 3 No. 44 and was awarded a three day, two night vacation sponsored by the Sahara-Nevada Club of Las Vegas. The California Hotel and Casino, also of Vegas, awarded a similar prize to Garth Bohn for being closest to the hole on the par 3. No. 7. A host of Cedar City merchants cooperated to help with sponsorship of the tournament, according to Wes Higbee, Association President. A list of sponsors included the following: Sugar Loaf Cafe, John's Kitchen Korner, Gales Par- Sales, Cedar Reality, Southern Utah Title, First Security Bank, State Bank of Southern Utah, Bradshaw Chevrolet Buick, Mr. Tops Restaurant, Salt Lake Telephone, Iron County Lumber. Other sponsors were: Tri-State Tri-State Motors, Ken Bettridge Distributing, Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Jenkins Oil, Hunter Hardware, Seven Up Bottling, Topham Distributing, Daves American, Slack and Seegmiller Accounting, Hermie's, Corry Real Estate, Prudential Federal Savings, ABC Auto ParkLs, and Markart Construction.
