Jeff Middleton, 44 and David Edwards, 19, provide blocking for fullback Frank Thorley, 21, as he picks up yardage for Cedar High Redmen. Redmen posted a 7-0 victory over Lehi in action Friday night. Redmen pickup win over Lehi carried to the 24 but on four plays the Redmen gained only one yard and gave up the ball. Lehi was again forced to punt and it was following this punt that the Redmen bagan their drive for the only score of the game. In the closing minutes of the game, with the time being kept on the field, Lehi went to the air and with a great catch they had the ball on the Redmen 25. The final play was a pass into the end zone wide of the mark and the Redmen had their first victory of the season. Stepping outside the league in action Friday night the Cedar High School Redmen picked up their first win of the season, a 7-0 victory over the Pioneers of Lehi. It was a defensive battle with neither team able to generate a potent offensive attack although both had chances. The Cedar City score came on the first play of the fourth period and capped an 83 yard march, the only sustained drive of the game. Hauling in a Lehi punt the Redmen returned to their own 33 and on the next play Brad Jackson scamped 40 around the left end to the Pioneers 37 only to have the play nullified by a clipping penalty. That took the ball back to the 17 yard line. On the next play quarterback quar-terback David Edwards found Bruce Whiting behind the Pioneer secondary and connected for a 45 yard gain to the Pioneer 43. Jeff Middleton cracked over the middle for a first and 10 on the 31 and Jackson of a pair of carries collected a first and 10 on the 20. A pitchout went astray and the Redmen lost five back to the 25, but Middleton on two carries moved it to the 13 and on a fourth and three Jackson picked up the first and goal at the nine. Jackson then carried to the three, Middleton Mid-dleton to the one for the final play of the period and on the opening play of the fourth period the Redmen cracked over for the score. Kevin Robinson booted the extra point for a 7-0 final score. Opportunitiers In the first quarter of play the Redmen had good field position and at least one major scoring opportunity. On the opening kick the Redmen caught the Pioneers deep on the three and they were forced to punt. The Redmen had the ball on Lehi's 41. They moved to the 31 but failed to pick up a first down. Another short punt gave the Redmen possession at midfield. On a pair of good runs Frank Thorley moved to the 34 for a first down and a face mask penalty moved the ball to the 19. After three plays the Redmen had a fourth and 8 and on the fourth down faked a fieldgoal and attempted a pass that was incomplete stopping the drive. The second period was a series of punts. Neither team could move the ball. The Redmen had a pair of first downs in the period and the Pioneers had only one. Neither team penetrated beyond their opponents 45 yard line. As the second half opened the Redmen generated a drive to the Pioneer 32 but a fumble on a pitchout lost 13 yards back to the 45 forcing a punt. Again, the Redmen, after a Lehi punt had possession on the Lehi 45. Thorley |
