Show P? Letters Hfttifcpk To The ll, m Editor Editor: I'm writing this letter to the person, or persons, that decided the designated roads were not exciting enough for their driving and drove on the beautiful lawns of the public building two weeks ago. It was sad for me to see the tire tracks on the lawns of the High School, Swimming Pool, City Park, Little League Baseball Park and both the lst-2nd Ward and the 3rd Ward churches. I wonder if those people realize how much time, effort and money are required to have such lovely lawns and landscaping at these locations. I'm sure they do not realize how much work will have to be done to restore these lawns back to their original beauty. With the efforts of the custodians of our public properties and Elmer and Florence Mitchell and their committees, Parowan City Main Street has been especially beautiful this year and has been enjoyed and appreciated by the citizens of Parowan and tourists passing through or visiting. I hope this pride of beauty and hard work will be extended ex-tended to everyone, so we will not have another useless act of destruction again. Frankie Lou Bentley Councilwoman Parks TVnarrmpnr Dear Editor: This is an open letter to the people of Iron Ouiiiy: During a three-month period preceding the 1977 Iron County Fair, much publicity was "given concerning con-cerning a group of Chariot Racing teams that were to appear at the horse races both on Saturday, September Sep-tember 3 and Monday, September 5 (Labor Day). The purpose of this letter is to let you know why they were not there and to place the blame where it belongs. I accepted the responsibility respon-sibility of securing the chariot group to participate at the fair as one of the group was an aquaintance of mine through my employment, and it was through him that I booked the group, instead of going to the proper channels and dealing with the club president. This was my first mistake. My next mistake was in being old-fashioned enough to believe that a man's word was his bond (and still is to many people. ) On Friday, September 2, I 1 was assured by my aquaintance that the group would be here to perform the next day and all was in order. or-der. As you probably noticed, they were not there, and in contacting my aquaintance by telephone at his home he informed me thay they had backed out and were not coming. Since their name was used in the publicity of the fair I would like to say that I have no quarrel with the official leadership of the group or any of its members and do not question their integrity, but it is very evident that I just worked through the wrong people. The blame for this in no way rests upon any member of the fair Board or its chairman who give of their time and talents so freely for the enjoyment of the people of this great county,. It is my hope that I have removed any question anyone might have had about this unfortunate happening for which I accept the blame and offer my Jiumble apology. May the Iron County Fair continue to grow and become bigger and better each year is my sincere wish. Sincerely. Milo Stones P.S. Mr. Carl Seifert who did appear at the fair with his chariot horses was not a member of the aforementioned aforemen-tioned group and I appreciate ap-preciate his appearance and efforts to help fill in. Dear Editor: We are writing this letter in response to the recent decision made by the Iron County Commissioners to virtually end outpatient mental health services for Iron County. This decision to end outpatient services was because of the commissioners com-missioners refusal to pay the $3,600 needed for Iron County to continue receiving federal funding for mental health services. For over 13 years, billions of dollars per year of our federal taxes have been poured into establishing community mental health centers throughout the country, In order for a county to receive it's portion of federal monies, it is mecessary to indicate community support and participation via contribution con-tribution of a small portion of the needed budget for operating the mental health center. For Iron County to receive its share of federal funds; we needed to support a mere 15 percent of the budget. In terms of investment in-vestment strategy, this means that Iron County would receive an $8.50 guaranteed return on every dollar invested in a mental health center. Where else could Iron County find such a lucrative investment? The residents of Iron County, through our federal taxes, have already paid for the National Community Mental Health Center's Act. But, the Iron County Commissioners have decided that we do not need mental health services in Iron County and have consequently decided that our federal tax dollars should be channeled to other counties for their mental health services, rather than to our own county. In other words, in an effort to save $3,600 of county money, the Iron County Commissioners have chosen to send $20,000 of Iron County residents federal tax dollars to other counties .and states. The decision to not fund mental health services does not lower our federal taxes, it , simply eliminates Iron County's ability to direct these funds back to our county. The commissioners reasons for not supporting mental health services revolves around their feeling that they lack control of mental health services and that they do not know enough about the program. Does the concept of Iron Coutny Commissioners having local control of the mental health center mean that the Commission wishes to have control of who receives treatment for emotional problems and what kind of treatment the residents of Iron County receive for those emotional problems? If I were to receive help for an emotional problem. I |
