Show Recent Storms Bring Double Water Measurements the month of March proved to be a very good water month according ac-cording to the representatives of , the soil conservation service ' who made the trek to the Yankee Reservoir during the week to take the second snow and water measurement there for the year. Making the trip were Lee Carlson Carl-son of the soil conservation service serv-ice and Ralph Orton, local merchant. mer-chant. They found that the snow cover and water content had almost al-most doubled at both the Yankee and the Ed Ward Flat where yearly measurements and taken and of which records are kept. This week the snow at the Yankee measured 47.4 Inches and had a water content of 10.1 Inches In-ches they report. A measurement taken the last of February showed show-ed 23 inches of snow with a water wa-ter content of 4.5 inches. At the Ed Ward Flat they found 40 inches of snow, containing contain-ing 8.2 inches of water, compared compar-ed to February measurements of 20 inches of snow with 4.0 inches inch-es of water. The fine storms of the month, therefore erased much of the deficiency de-ficiency in snow cover in the Yankee Meadow and Bowery section of the Parowan drainage areas, and brought the moisture mois-ture content up to near normal for that section. March was also a good water month for Parowan volley accord ac-cord injr to Clayton Rasmussen, car'takei of the local weather " "- informs us that mois-:hc mois-:hc montn of March ,-! at t- station, !. ...ifvi to i.7j inches for the monui, which is very good but will not erase the deficiency for the water year which began on Oct 1, 1963. The final storm of the month, on Tuesday evening and Wednesday Wed-nesday morning of last week contributed .40 of an inch of water wa-ter in the form of about four Inchest In-chest of snow. Road crews plowing snow from the road In Parowan Main Canyon Can-yon also report that the snow cover up that way looks very good at this time. Following the first snow storm of last week, which closed roads in several areas, it Is reported that there was 14 inches of new snow Just below the S-Turn in Main Canyon, Can-yon, and the following day five inches more snow was measured Just below there on the road, or a total of 19 inches in the storm. Accompanying Carlson and Orton Or-ton on their trip to the Yankee last week were Game Conservation Conserva-tion Officers Larry Eyre of this city and Bill Arnold of Beaver. They went there to take tests of the oxygen content In the water in the Yankee Reservoir and determine de-termine how the liaii iiieie wcii getting along. The Yankee is covered cov-ered by a heavy layer of ice at this time of year, but the creeks on both ends of the reservoir as a rule, keep the fish supplied with oxygen. |
