Show Cedar City Youth Council Initiates Important Employment Program A youth employment program will be initiated this month under un-der the sponsorship of the Celar City Youth Council of the Coordinating Co-ordinating Council. The project has been adopted by the Council in keeping with national and state efforts to stimulate activities for betterment better-ment of children and youth. The project which will begin this month and operate on a year-round basis will strive to obtain five specific goals. Assistance to youth through the employment program is expected ex-pected to be derived as follows: 1. That through summer and part-time jobs they would gain valuable experience in working and handling self-earned money; 2. That they would come to a better understanding of our changing labor market and better bet-ter evaluate themselves in relationship rela-tionship to its needs; 3. That it would help them to realize the Importance of further education and training; 4. That more of them would be kept occupied in productive activities rather than wasting time or engaging in delinquent de-linquent practices; and 5. That thev would aonulre b mori defi nite pictures of how they might fit into the world of work and become more stable and useful citizens in our labor force of the future. Training Sessions "With these goals in mind and with study or similar projects attempted at-tempted in other areas it was determined de-termined that in order for the project to be effective it Is necessary ne-cessary to develop skills and attitudes conducive to work that might e performed. As a result a program has been set up through the cooperation coopera-tion of the Cedar City High School and Junior High School, with the Utah State Employment Security office here and with other leaders of the community, to begin a series of training programs pro-grams to be conducted during the month of April and May. Training will be offered in areas ar-eas where teenagers might find work opportunities and which were indicated as potential Jobs uuvugil ucauOiii"iaiuc uisuiu- i uted at the high school and tab ulated to help in directing the program. Some examples that might be feasible are: 1, grocery work, six hours training by local merchants; merch-ants; 2, housekeeping, six hour training; 3, yard work and services, serv-ices, six hours training; 4, general gen-eral household fixup, cleanup, minor painting, wall paper cleaning, clean-ing, minor carpentry, etc. from six to 12 hours training 5, baby sitting, six to eight hours training, train-ing, and 6, other services such as dishwashing, car hop, restaurant waitress. Under the plans of the program those who subscribe and complete com-plete the program would then become be-come a reservoir of qualified people to do work in the specific fields. They would receive a certificate cer-tificate and be placed first through the Youth Employment service. Facilities Obtained Facilities of the high school have already been offered for use in the proposed training program pro-gram and various businessmen and qualified people in each of the fields will be asked to help conduct the training. A procedure for placement has also been devised and is expected expect-ed to be placed in operation this month. Some of the financial problems have also been worked out. The Utah State Employment Service has made available office space In the basement of the of-tice of-tice located on 100 East and 200 North Streets for the center. Telephone Tel-ephone service and stationary supplies will also be provided through this office. Under the plan a youth Interviewer Inter-viewer will be necessary to maintain the center. The Rotary International has offered to give two tuition and fee scholarships to College of Southern Utah to help defray this expense. Under the proposed procedure of the Youth Employment Center application cards will be made available at the high school and junior high school so students who are interested in obtaining work can register. The employment Interviewer will then process and file the' applications. It will also be his duty to take Job orders .hat tie received, make referrals and keep records of activities. He will also make employer contacts and promotional telephone contacts con-tacts to solicit activity. The Center will be opened a half day for six days a week in the morning or as needed. The propcjed plan Includes the pos- student to work from April to mid-July with a second student, perferrably a junior student, to work from mid-July until the end of the summer, and then on part-time basis until near Thanksgiving time. Further cooperation of the employment em-ployment security office would include the training of the interviewer inter-viewer as well as serve in a supervisor su-pervisor capacity over the center's cen-ter's operation. |
