Show UCLA Bulletin Publicizes Area The University of California at Los Angeles, which will offer a six-week course of field training in archaeology in this area in connection with the College of Southern Utah Summer School, has given the local school and Cedar City some unusually fine advertising in a brochure issued in connection with the southern program. The brochure, distributed to advanced anthropology and sociology so-ciology students, announces the summer training program with the College of Southern Utah as host institution. The summer training course In field archaeology will be conducted con-ducted by Dr. C. W. Meighan, Assistant Professor of Anthropology. Anthro-pology. He will be aided in the field by a Teaching Assistant and a museum technician, both of whom will participate in the student instruction. Dr. Meighan conducted a similar simi-lar session here last summer with such success that the program pro-gram will be continued again this summer. Remains of prehistoric pre-historic adobe buildings constructed con-structed about 1100 A. D. were excavated near Taragonah by Dr. Meighan and his students last year and at the end of the season sea-son Dr. Meighan was enthusiastic about the success of the summer's sum-mer's work and anxious to get back again this year. As was the case last year the UCLA students registered for the course will be quartered at the College of Southern Utah, and will carry out archaeological investigations in-vestigations in this area. The 1955 season will be devoted devot-ed to a continuation of last year's excavations of Pueblold sites in southern Utah. Two courses will be offered, one for undergraduates undergrad-uates without previous archaeological archaeo-logical training and one for graduate grad-uate students. The work of the session will be devoted to actual ac-tual excavation of prehistoric Indian villages, with training in such topics as mapping of archaeological arch-aeological sites, photography, field recording of burials and architectural features, prrsenwk-tion prrsenwk-tion and restoration of archaeological archaeo-logical linds and the writing cX archaeological records and reports. re-ports. The association of UCLA with CSU in its summer school sessions ses-sions lends a national prominence promin-ence to the local summer school that few institutions of this size enjoy. Mrs. Robert Heyborne and son Linford and daughter, Brrnda are spending this week in Provo as guests of her people while Mr. Heyborne is in Las Vegas to witness the A-Bomb experiment. |
