Show GOOD BREAKFAST GOOD MORNING! by Marguerite MUkelsen i s k XX -Ji - ' wA Continued studies of the dietary habits of the American people by doctors, scientists and nutritionists have disclosed that breakfast is the one meal most often slighted by persons of all age groups. Adults are the leading offenders in neglecting to eat the most important meal of the day which should provide one-fourth to one-third one-third of the total daily caloric needs as well as a proportionate hare of the essential nutrients. A basic breakfast pattern formulated by medical authorities and leading nutritionists consists of fruit, cereal, milk, bread and butter or fortified margarine. These are the foods that provide the body with fuel energy and essential nutrients that are needed by children and adults for better stamina, maximum efficiency and greater acuity during the day. Of the adults surveyed, only 40 percent of the women and 66 percent per-cent of the men stated that they were in the habit of eating an adequate breakfast. Results of the survey also showed that industrial workers suffered a larger number of accidents in the last hour before lunch and the majority of those workers injured had arrived at work without eating a well-balanced breakfast. Other findings which indicate a need for better breakfasts form the basis for statements of doctors who say that the average person does not eat enough for breakfast and that the average breakfast is very poorly balanced. Several sound and practical conclusions were drawn from the series of experiments to insure maximum physical and mental efficiency during morning hours, breakfast is essential; decreased work output and mental acuity are the detrimental effects resulting from skipping breakfast; and, to maintain certain physiologic functions at peak levels throughout the morning, a basic cereal breakfast, consisting of fruit, cereal, milk, bread and butter or fortified forti-fied margarine is nutritionally a sound breakfast to supply approximately approxi-mately one-fourth of the daily caloric needs. |
