Now maki ir their initial coast-to-coast tour, the trio U'rched-uled U'rched-uled to appear in Cedar City on Wednesday, March 4, under the auspices of the Music Arts Association. While the musical combination combina-tion of Mannes-Gimpel-Silva is only half a year old, two-thirds of it is no real newcomer to American chamber music circles. The present trio is an outgrowth of an earlier ensemble founded in 19-18 in which Leopold Mannes Man-nes was the pianist. Luigi Silva, the cellest, and Cittorio Broro, the violinist. Under the title of The Mannes Trio, the throe pave a series of outstanding concerts , in New York City and on 'our. and were well on their way to becoming one of the nation's leading chamber groups. But violinist vio-linist Brero, who had come from his native Italy in '48 to help form the trio, ran into "visa trouble" trou-ble" and was unable to remain in the United States on a permanent per-manent visaj With his departure, the Manxes Man-xes Trio had to discontinue its activities until a violinist of his distinctive artistic calibre could be found. The problem remained un solved until a year later when a friend of Silva and Mannes invited in-vited the two to a party at which a violinist named Bronislav Gim-pel Gim-pel was present. Gimpel was, of course, known to the others by reputation, but they had never met in person. During the course of the evening, eve-ning, the guests, who were mainly main-ly musicians, began the inevitable inevita-ble session of informal chamber cham-ber music playing. Silva and Mannes were teamed with Gim-pel, Gim-pel, and realized, after a few-minutes few-minutes of playing with him, that here was the artist they had been seeking. They promptly proposed that he join them as violinist in a new trio to be known as Mannes-Gimpel-Silva. Gimpel assented, and a few weeks later, the artists ar-tists assembled for their first rehearsal. I |
