Show Sheriff May Post Guards Along Lake Mead Shore Las Vegas, Nev April 28- J. R. McQuUkin, Managing Director of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Com-merce today conferred with Sheriff Olen Jones upon the advisability of posting at least ten special guards on the shores of Lake Mead In preparation prep-aration for the visit to Las Vegas of Ous P. Backman, water and cloud-minded executive secretary of the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce, and one hundred of the Chamber's members. They are due w arrive May 4 on a good-will tour of southern Utah and Nevada. Backman has made the headline? of newspapers across the nation by claiming for Utah all the water on the western slopes of the United States, and then topped It off by claiming all water-laden clouds whether they were over Nevada or not, and threatened to sue Reno, Nevada, for its experiments in trying try-ing to milk the clouds of snow. Since the Colorado River is another an-other of Backman's pet claims, guards were deemed necessary to forestall any attempt of the tour members good will or not, to drag it back to Utah. "They may be on a good-will tour from Utah',, McQullkln declared. "But It is better to play safe. We 1 mm oamw ""' will be happy to lunch and dine with them, to have them enjey our fine climate, use our great recreational recrea-tional facilities such as good fishing fish-ing and boating on Lake Mead, and to participate In the fuller life of Las Vegas, but they'll have to leave our lake alone. What do they want to do, make a desert of Nevada?" |
