Show Wildlife Federation Begins Experiment on Navajo Lake The Cedar City Wildlife Federa-, tion in cooperation with the State Fish and Game department has un dertaken an experiment this week that may go a long ways toward saving the fish In Navajo lake that otherwise might die before the spring season opens. It had been determined that the oxygen content con-tent of the water is so low that most of the fish are in danger of suffocation before the ice on the lake breaks, which presents tlic problem of getting the ice off the lake as Quickly as possible. Following reports of experiments conducted In Wisconsin, where conditions con-ditions are very similar to those at Navajo lake, a plan of sprinkling lampblack on the ice has been adopted. Experience in Wisconsin Indicates that the lampblack causes caus-es the ice to melt much faster than it would ordinarily do. If the ice can be thawed through even a few j days earlier than the natural thaw I would do it may mean the saving of many fish. On Monday of this week Royce Knight, operator or the Municipal Airport at Cedar City, who has been engaged in rceent yrars In treating farm crops by sprinkling chemicals from an airplane, flew over the lake and dusted the entire surfap with luuipblpck. "We sry fcccplng o.t fingers crossed", cross-ed", Arnold Anderson, president cf the Wildlife Federation, states, "aud hope that the experiment will provp successful. |
