All that is left of light plane that crashed at the Cedar City Municipal Airport Wed- Two Injured Critically As Plane Crashes at Airport Two northern Utah men were critically Injured in an airplane crash at the Cedar City Municipal Airport last evening, -when their light planfe was whipped out of control by a sudden strong wind shortly after a takeoff from the local field. John Crockett of Logan, pilot, and Kenneth Bernston' of Smlthfleld, were rushed to the Iron county hos-plcal hos-plcal for treatment. Both are reported re-ported to be In critical condition, but will be transferred to northern Utah hospitals. An air ambulance from H1U Field will arrive here this afternoon to transfer Crockett to the Veterans hospital in Salt Lake City. Bernston will later be transferred trans-ferred to St. Marks hospital In Salt Lake City for treatment by the polio society, since he had previous-ly previous-ly been a sufferer from polio. Crockett suffered the loss of his right eye, a fracture of the leg and pelvis, multiple cuts and bruises, Bernston suffered a compound fracture frac-ture of the right leg, ankle and hip. and both hands were fractured. He also suffered severe cuts about the face and head. With Crockett at the controls the plane, a Luscombe two-seater, took off at about 5 p. m. and after reaching reach-ing an altitude of about 300 feet, tt was apparently caught by a strong "gust of wind. The plane was in a left turn, witnesses said, and was forced back toward the airport, crashing near the runway from, which it had taken off. The plane, owned by the Skyway Hying club of Logan, was a total wreck, Royce K. Knight, airport manager, reported. It was reported that although the wind had been blowing all day, it had not been suf fiflclently strong to Interfere with normal plane traffic. The accident Is being investigated today by Joe Bergin, state aeronautics aeronau-tics director, and Howard C. Harris CAA Inspector, Santa Monica, California. |
