Show In planning a trip include first aid kit When planning a trip, it is always a good idea to put together a small first aid kit that can be tucked into your luggage and hopefully go unused. You needn't carry a small pharmacy, but a few essentials should be packed. You'll want to have enough first aid supplies on hand to cover most emergencies, including asprin or Tylenol, an antacid and, if you're traveling with children, plenty of Band-Aid adhesive bandages to cover minor cuts and scrapes. You may want to include a prescription for glasses as well as double the amount of any medications you're presently taking. In addition, don't forget to ask your doctor about a remedy for diarrhea diar-rhea so you can be prepared if you develop this embarassing condition. Traveler's diarrhea is not a major medical worry, but being sick far from home can be a frightening as well as bewildering experience. The best precaution is to be prepared in advance. Temporary traveler's diarrhea or acute nonspecific diarrhea accounts for 30 percent of all diarrhea. Eating spicy foods or drinking contaminated water, as well as jet lag or overindulgence over-indulgence in either food or liquor, can cause diarrhea. Before you travel, your physician can tell you about a fast-acting anti-diarrheal anti-diarrheal medicine, such as IMODIUM IM-ODIUM (loperamide HCI), which can reduce painful cramps and prevent loss of water and electrolytes. If your're unlucky enough to get traveler's diarrhea, you'll want to get better quickly so as not to lose precious vacation time. IMODIUM provides fast relief within one hour after the initial in-itial dose. Because it is used only as needed, comes in capsule form and is easy to carry around, you don't have to pack bottles or measure out doses of a messy liquid. Traveler's diarrhea is seldom a serious condition. However, if symptons persist or if you develop a fever over 101 or notice blood or mucous in your stool, consult a doctor.
