Show City faces blight district resolution Again the Vernal City Council will be facing a resolution establishing a district in the city, eligible for a Community Com-munity Development Block Grant, for prevention of deterioration in that area. The area in the proposed district is 500 West to 1500 West between Main Street and 500 North. The Vernal City Council at their meeting two weeks ago, refused to approve ap-prove the resolution establishing the district, because it labeled the area "blighted." But the council approved a resolution establishing a Community Communi-ty Development area, the first half of the requirements of the block grant. City Manager Kenneth Bassett, who wasn't at the council's meeting Continued on page 3 Blight... Continued from page 1 because of a birth in his family, later explained that the resolution doesn't establish a blighted area, but an area that should be protected from blight. Councilmen agree that the area in the proposed district is far from being be-ing blighted as several of them live in the area. The controversy of the resolution stems from a recent change in the wording wor-ding required by the state from "health and welfare" to "slum and blighted." Vernal City has already awarded bids on a sewer line on 500 West that the Community Block Grant of $90,000 will cover. Approval of the two resolutions resolu-tions establishing a community development area and a "blight" prevention area are final formalities. The council will reconsider the resolution establishing the blight prevention area Wednesday. . Also at the Wednesday council meeting as increase in the monthly cable television rate from $7.50 to $9 will be considered. Public input on the hike will be heard at the council meeting at 8 p.m. |
