Show Eugene Woody wins match due to TKO Eugene Woody of Jensen, who is fighting for Dell's Club in Provo, scored a technical knockout in the third round in a match with contender, Joe Pena, of the state prison team in the Provo Invitational Saturday. Woody, 130, open division, connected with a lot of body punches and the fight was stopped in the third round. "Pena is a highly regarded fighter. Woody won his biggest fight of his career so far," stated Steve Paulson of the Vernal Boxing Club. Jon Culpepper, Vernal, 80, lost a close decision to Aaron Cordova of Provo and Jay Burr, 60, lost a squeaker to Frank Midrid of Salt Lake City. Chris Crites, Vernal, 70, lost a close match to Robbie Montoya of the Police Athletic League and Vernal's Larry Harrison, 75, lost a decision to Joey Lopez of the Police Athletic League. Members of the Vernal Boxing Club will compete in matches at the state prison Jan. 30, and Vernal members as well as Woody will take part in the Utah State Golden Gloves Tournament in Salt Lake City Feb. 5-6. The United States of America - American Boxing Federation (formerly known as Junior Olympics) tournament will take place Feb. 26-27 in Salt Lake City. Winners will advance to the regionals in Pocatello. Idaho, the following week. Vernal Boxing Club members are training in the wrestling room at Uintah High School 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Any youngster who would like to join are welcome, according to Paulson.
