Show Manila man dies in St. George Funeral services were held in Green River, Wyo. Thursday, Jan. 14 for Charles Potter Hale, 88, who died in St. George, Utah Jan. 10, 1982. Officiating at the services was Manila's Bishop William M. Briggs. Also taking part in the services were J. Kent Olsen who was the speaker and Lawrence Biorn who, accompanied at the piano by his granddaughter Terri Gutz, sang "Beyond the Sunset." Others taking part in the services and acting as pallbearers were sons and grandsons of Mr. Hale. Charles (Curly) Hale was a former resident of Manila, leaving the area in 1930. He was in the trucking business when living here and was a pioneer in that field locally known as the man to put the first truck over the Uinta Mountains. He is remembered by the people here for his unusual strength, his industry and his honesty. He hauled produce for the local ranchers. Mr. Hale was born Oct. 26, 1893 in Sidney, Neb., the son of Lewis Hubert and Rachael Agnes Tipton Hale. He married Bessie Alberta Jones in January 1914. She passed away in 1926. Later he married Martha Goshen in 1935 and she passed away in 1949. He remarried in 1952 to Katie Laverne . Clark who preceded him in death in 1975. He was a member of the LDS Church. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Rex (Ray) Masters of Escalante; two sons, Charles Porter Jr., of Hurricane and Lewis Howard of Lancaster, Calif. ; one sister, Mrs. Ida Hale Campbell, Oroville, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great great-great grandchildren. Services were at the Smith Funeral Home in Green River. Burial was at the Riverview Cemetery in Green River. |
