Young blanked Bath of Uinvah Utfes skin Orem Tigers, 5 1 f o 6, and improve Region 7 record to 4-0 If a contest would have been held on predicting the final score in the Uintah-Orem Uintah-Orem varsity wrestling meet Thursday, Thur-sday, the winner would have been the scoreboard at Uintah High School as it predicted that the final score would be 50 to 0 in favor of Uintah and it was off by only seven points as the Uintah varsity team crushed the Orem Tigers 51 to 6 in Vernal. The scoreboard was stuck on 50-0 before the matches began and finally the Uintah coaches got the scoreboard changed to 0-0, but the scoreboard knew what it was talking about as the Uintah junior varsity team scored 49 points and the varsity team put 51 points up on the scoreboard. Uintah has a 4-0 mark in Region 7 matches. Uintah's 98-pounder, Jerry Tingey, gave the Utes a 6-0 lead when he pinned a former Vernal tussler, Steve Woodhouse, with 1 :28 left in the second round. Tingey grabbed a 5-0 lead in the first round on a takedown and a three-point three-point near fall and added a reversal in the second round. "I pinned him with a double arm bar. I kept my knee plow in and kept breaking him down," stated Tingey. The Utes acquired a 12-0 advantage when Brent Morrill, !f5, pinned John Clayton with 29 seconds left in the second round. Clayton decked Morrill in the first round with a takedown for a 2-0 lead, but Morrill became near fall mad in the second round as he pocketed three near falls for an 8-0 lead. Morrill put Clayton out of his misery with a fall late in the second round. "I gained my pin due to a cross face cradle. It is my favorite pin hold and it worked again," said Morrill. Uintah's 12 point lead was reduced to 12 points when Orem's Matt Nelson pinned Uintah's 112 pounder, Keith Campbell, with 16 seconds left in the ' match. Nelson jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first round on a takedown and three-point near fall. He added a three-point three-point near fall in the second round for an 8-2 lead and nabbed a fall in the final round. The pin by Nelson brightened the Tigers' hopes, but their hopes became nopes as Uintah outscored Orem 39 to 0 in the remaining nine matches and won the meet by the score to 51 to 6. Uintah's David Gentry, 119, placed the Utes back on the victory highway with an 8-2 triumph over Evan Barrett. Gentry pocketed a takedown, but Barrett acquired a neutral to cut Gentry's lead to one point after one round. However, Gentry gained a takedown and a two-point near fall in the second round and added a reversal in the third round to win the match by six points. A wrestling error by Jeff Good made the 126 pound match a lot closer than it should have been. Good grabbed a 5-2 lead in the first round. Uintah's Good dropped Ron Lish for a takedown, but Lish tied up the match with a reversal. Good quickly gained a neutral and takedown for a three point lead. Good had a 5-2 lead late in the match, but slipped and allowed Lish to acquire a ' reversal. Lish almost turned Good over as the final buzzer sounded. Uintah's 132 pounder, Torr McCurdy, nabbed the third win in a row for the Utes as he blasted Wade Whiting 11 to 1. The match was tied at 0-0 after one round and McCurdy owned a slim lead at 2-1 after two rounds, but McCurdy staged a wrestling explosion as he ripped Whiting for nine points in the final round on two near falls, neutral and a takedown. The Utes' Kent Boren, 138, acquired a 5-1 win in his match with Rob Lish of Orem. Boren nabbed two takedowns in the first round for a 4-1 lead and added a neutral in the second round. The 145 pound match consisted of a battle between Vernal resident. Damn Bailey, and former Vernal resident, Mike Woodhouse, and Bailey emerged as the winner due to a 12-4 score. Bailey garnered an 8-2 lead due to three near falls in the second round and added two reversals in the third round. The two Woodhouses on the Orem team are members of the same family which produced former Uintah athletes in Morgan and Scott Woodhouse Morgan nabbed two state titles for the Uintah Utes. Now it was time for referee, Maughan Col ton, to deliver a low five to the mat and Uintah's Randy Smuin, 155. and Pat Jenkins. 167. forced Colton to slap the mat as they gained pins in the first round. Smuin pinned Adams with 1:10 left in the first round and Jenkins dropped Richard Stanley to the mat for a fall with 32 seconds remaining in the first round. "I shot a fireman on him and used the arm bar and stuck him. I had him on his hack for the fall." remarked Smuin. "I pinned him with a double arm bar and I was glad to get it over with." said Jenkins. Uintah's Jody Young. 185. didn't gain a fall, but he nabbed a shutout as he blanked Brian Bath 8-0.
