"The victory over Orem is probably the most satisfying win I've ever had in basketball. Orem scored at the buzzer to put the game into overtime. The ball went through the hoop as the buzzer sounded. They had two shots at it. They put in a ten foot shot from the foul line. Kenny Rasmussen got a field goal for Vernal with 11 seconds left and was fouled. Rasmussen put in a free throw, but it was taken away because he had his foot on the line. Orem put in a shot at the buzzer to tie up the game," said Vernal Junior High hoop coach, Craig Monsen. Monsen added, "Paul Viles put in a shot to give us a two point lead early in the overtime, but Orem tied up the game with a field goal. Rasmussen tossed in a close in shot for a two point lead, but Orem gained a one point advantage ad-vantage due to a free throw and a field goal. Blake Horrocks put in two free throws late in the overtime to give us a one point lead. Orem threw the ball out of bounds and we took over control of the basketball with three seconds left. Our kids really showed they have a lot of class and heart. They never gave up. We kept coming up with the big plays." Vernal and Orem were tied at 11-11 after one quarter of action. Viles was the top scorer for the Panthers in the first quarter at five points. Orem jumped out to a 23-21 lead in the second quarter behind six points by Permann and four points by Rheers. Orem had a 36 to 34 lead after three quarters. Lewis popped in five counters for Vernal and Orem's Bradshaw scored six points. The score at the end of the fourth quarter was 46-46. Horrocks scored six points for Vernal and Herlin put in six counters in the fourth quarter. Horrocks was the top scorer for Vernal Ver-nal at 13 points. Horrocks put in four field goals and hit 5 out of 7 free throws. Viles put in 12 points and Rasmussen scored ten points. Also scoring points for Vernal were Tim Haslem, 7; Tony Lewis, 5; Jason Taylor, 4 and Cory Hacking, 1. Vernal fired in 20 field goals and hit 14 out of 27 free throws. Orem's top scorers were Herlin, 14; Permann, 11 and Pheers, 11. The Vernal 9th Grade Panthers improved im-proved their record to 10 wins and 0 losses with a 63 to 52 triumph over the Rough Riders in Roosevelt, January 13. Roosevelt grabbed a 16 to 14 lead in the Russell Nielsen. Horrocks led the Panthers Pan-thers with six points. Vernal outscored Roosevelt, 12 to 6 for a 26 to 22 lead in the second quarter. Viles led the Panthers in the second quarter with four points. The Panthers grabbed a lead of 47 to 40 in the third quarter behind nine points by Rasmussen and four points each by Taylor and Viles. Horrocks scored ten points in the fourth quarter and the final score was 63 to 52 in favor of Vernal. Ver-nal. Horrocks was the top scorer for Vernal Ver-nal with 19 points. He put in nine field goals and hit 1 out of 2 free throws. Rasmussen scored 15 points. Also scoring scor-ing points for Vernal were: Viles, 8; Lewis, 8; Rodney Hilkey, 4; Haslem, 4; Taylor, 4 and Derrick Adams, 2. Roosevelt's number one scorer was Nielsen at 25 points. Nielsen put in ten points and hit 5 out of 9 free throws. Lloyd tossed in 17 points. The Vernal Frosh Tournament is set for Friday and Saturday at Vernal Junior High. Games set for Friday are: Vernal vs Canyon View, 4 p.m.; Altamont vs Helper, 5:30 p.m.; Craig vs Notre Dame, 7 p.m. and Steamboat Springs vs Richfield, 8:30 p.m. The first game on Saturday will begin at 10 a.m. The championship game will be played Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The third place game will take place at 2:30 p.m. and the consolation game will be played at 4 p.m. "It should be a pretty good tourney and we have a good field of teams. Some of the strong teams in the tourney should be Vernal, Steamboat Springs, Craig and Richfield. Helper and Canyon Ca-nyon View have pretty good teams and Notre Dame has two really good players. A five member all tourney team and a most valuable player will be named. Trophies will be awarded to the first place, second place and consolation consola-tion championship teams.
