Show Harmston resigns as resources department head The longest-serving high .level appointee ap-pointee in Gov. Scott M. Matheson's administration, Gordon E. Harmston, director of the Department of Natural Resources, Thursday of last week . announced his resignation. Mr. Harmston, 63, was appointed to the post April 8, 1968, by then-Gov. Calvin L. Rampton, after serving on the former Coordinating Council for Natural Resources and filling out four years prior to that as a state senator. The resignation will be effective June 30. In accepting Mr. Harmston's resignation, Gov. Matheson said "Gordon's service and dedication to the State of Utah will be missed. We can point with pride to the many contributions con-tributions Gordon made in shaping natural resource policy in Utah in both resource development and in conservation con-servation efforts." Mr. Harmston previously owned and operated, and continues to own, with his son, the Frontier Motel and Restaurant in Roosevelt. During his 13-year tenure the department has grown from three to 10 people and the department's total personnel, within the various divisions, now numbers about 800. Gov. Matheson praised Mr. Harmston Harm-ston for "meeting the challenges... of explosive population .growth, heightened awareness of man's impact on the environment, increased water needs and the expanded development of Utah's energy resources..." |
