Show Uintah graduate, Lori AAott, is member of SUSC softball team The Southern Utah State College soft-ball soft-ball team is off to a fast start this season, and part of the reason is the play of a Uintah High School graduate. Lori Mott, daughter of Vaughn and Margie Mott, Vernal, plays as a regular infielder for the Thunderbirds. SUSC has won ten of its first 13 games and is establishing itself as a favorite in the Rocky Mountain . Athletic Conference. Con-ference. The T-Bird team is competing this year in the first season of a national program established by the National Intercollegiate Athletics Association. NAIA1. "Lori has excellent skills; she is a good fielder and an exceptionally good hitter." Bruce Osborne, SUSC softball coach says. "Her speed is also an asset both offensively and defensively." Mott leads the team in hitting with a .480 batting average. She also hits with power; she is tied for the team lead in home runs and is second in triples, second se-cond in runs batted in and second in total hits. SUSC's ten victories include wins over some pretty respectable opponents, op-ponents, including University of Nevada-Las Vegas IUNLV and Nor- thern Arizona University. While this year's SUSC early season record is impressive, it isn't unique in the Thunderbird softball program. Only once in the past five years have the T-Birds failed to win at least ten of their first 13 contests. In 1977, the 'Birds won 17 games before losing their third contest, con-test, and in 1976, the team lost only two games all year. "Lori is a good influence on the team unity that we enjoy," Osborne said. "Because of the way team members get along and play together, we are a better squad." Mott is a junior at SUSC. She plans to complete a major in physical education and a minor in industrial eduation graphics. "We are happy to have women of this caliber on the team," Osborne says. . LORI MOTT |
