Show Hospital price too low Dear Editor: I finally found out from an HCA employee why the county commissioners com-missioners accepted the lower bid on the hospital ($3.5 million). The first bid (too low to begin with) by HCA for $3.75 million, carried a stipulation that the county would not collect taxes from HCA for five years. This was to help HCA, a private enterprise, "get started." It doesn't take a computer to figure that if you can't get a county to defer your taxes, the next best thing is to convince the commissioners that because you will upgrade their medical care, etc. and etc., slashing a bunch off your purchase price will be to their advantage... In other words, we, the people, own a brand new chloroformed white elephant and we should be overjoyed that Hospital Corporation of America will take it off our hands even if we have to pay boot to get them to do it... And how about printing the names of the goldbrlckers who haven't paid their hospital bills? If we don't pay our taxes we get free advertisement. Getting brighter, DOROTHY L. PELTIER |
