Show WOMEN APPOINTED TO DEFHGE COUNCIL 3 Named to Executive Committee; Com-mittee; Heber J. Grant . Member of Board. UTAH IN GOOD LIGHT Approval Given Smileage and K. of C. Campaign in This State. Upon telegraphic suggestion from Chairman L H. i'arnsworth of the atate council of defense, who is at present pres-ent in Del Monto, Cal., the council yesterday yes-terday afternoon approved Governor Bamberger's appointment of women rnenibcra to aid in tho work and three of them were named to the executive committee, which directs affairs between be-tween meetings of tho main body. Appointments to membership in the council which they body contirmod are: Mrs. .1. William Knight, I'rovo; Mrs. Thomas D. Dee an d Mrs. Bichscl, Og-rlen; Og-rlen; Airs. William N. Williams, Mrs. Thomas Kearns, Mrs. K. B. Critchlow, Mrs. S. Richards, Miss Klsa Bamberger, Bam-berger, Mrs. Union Worthing'ton and Mrs. K. 10 L. Collier, all of Salt Lake. Mrs. Williams, Miss Bamberger and Mrs. BichseJ were immediately appointed ap-pointed to tho executive committee. Heber J. Grant was named as a member of the finance committee and of the executive body. Acceptance was mucin of the appointment of George H. Dern and M. K. Inch to take the places of Clarence Bamberger and C. .10. Groes- beck, resigned, and Mr. Dern was appointed ap-pointed to tho finance committee and Mr. Inch w:us given place on the cora-mittco cora-mittco on labor and transportation. Men Needed for Shipyards. Co-operative stato and federal offices are to bo opened in Halt Lako arid Og-den Og-den for registering men for service in tho shipyards, Dr. D. A. Plumlv and C. ' C Clyce, representing the federal government, roporting that in two weeks 650 men had been registered in Utah for this work. Tho nation needs 2,r0,000 men in the shipyards, it was reported, and Utah's quota of these is llibO. Six hundred and fifty have already volunteered.. volun-teered.. The object is to register men to intorfore as little as possible with local industries. Approval was given the smileago and Knights of Columbus campaigns and a committee consisting of W. W. Armstrong, Arm-strong, Dt. John A. Widtsoe and T. S. Browning of Ogden was named to investigate in-vestigate that proposed by the Salvation Salva-tion Army. Utah was reported as in good standing in the Federation of Statos society in San Diego, CaJ., which looks after the interests of soldiers at Camp Kearny. The council appropriated $100 toward maintenance of the quarters established by the federation, an investigation of the situation having been made by Colonel Col-onel R. W. Young and Chaplain B. H. Koberts, at the request of Secretary W. C. Ebaugh Traveling Expenses Paid. W. F. Jensen was named to the com-i com-i mittee on commercial economies in de-' de-' liveries, utilization of waste and elimination elimi-nation of extravagance. Payment of the traveling expenses of a member of the University of Utah faculty as instructor in gas motors at Camp Kearny was authorized. The instructor in-structor is sent at tho request of Colonel Voung. F. C. Richmond reportod contracts involving in-volving $9300 for films from the federal bureau of public information. It was voted that the proceeds from exhibition of these educational films be turned over to the lied Cross society, the local chapters participating in the distribution distribu-tion in proportion to the amounts taken in admissions in each district. Importance of the work of tho welfare wel-fare committee was emphasized as a result re-sult of a conference held January 16 and special instructions were given to the following committeemen to look after needs of farmers in their respective respec-tive divisions: V. J. Moran, labor; W. J. Geddes of Ogden, containers and supplies; Georgo T. Odell, machinerv. George T. Odell reported excellent progress in the savings stamps sales, lint desired better co-operation on the part of banks in that thev keep larger supplies of stamps on hand for the accommodation ac-commodation of tho public.
