Stirred by a story which has been in circulation here for several days that they had. threatened to poison . meat and bread sold to their American . customers, Adolph M. Miller, proprietor of the Washington market, and Henry G. Hess, proprietor of the Hess bakery, issued affidavits today declaring the accusation to be untrue and vicious. Each man has posted $150, which will be divided among charity organizations if anyone can prove the story to be true, according to the signed statements. The story is to the effect that a woman school teacher of the city wag purchasing purchas-ing thread at the Hess bakery when she overheard the proprietor talking in German Ger-man with Mr. Miller. Being able' to understand un-derstand . German, the school teacher is alleged to have heard the baker say he would poison his bread and Mr. Miller to declare that lie would poison his meat In the event of a declaration of war by the United States against Germany. Resenting Resent-ing the alleged threats, gossip had it that the school teacher threw a loaf of bread at the baker and broke a showcase in the place. Upon hearing the story for the first time today, both German business men went to an attorney and made affidavits 1 denying the charges. |
