Show SEVEN EHJ5IMEMS REPDRTEDJT OGDEN Five Join National Guard and Two Go Into the Navy. Special to The Tribune. OGDEN. March 2S. The inspiring effect ef-fect of last night's patriotic mass meeting 1 was shown here today when a total of seven enlistments were recorded, five m the national guard and two in the navy. From the number of queries that have been made at the recruiting office in the Twenty-fourth street armory, the officers of the two Ogden troops of the national . guard are iniluenced to the opinion that ; it will not be long before both units have been recruited to war strength. Luring the day August Jacobsen, Edward Ed-ward J. Thorsted and Robert Berry, all of Ogden. passed the preliminary examinations examina-tions for enlistment in troop B. For enlistment en-listment in troop K. the new unit. Albert James and John V. Sharrock were accepted ac-cepted after the preliminary examination. During the day Leonard R. Bailey and Herbert Dabbey, both of this city, applied at the armory for enlistment in the United States navy. They were directed to the navy recruiting station in,, the Western Union building and were accepted accept-ed by E. F. Stodmeister, chief gunner's mate, as apprentice seamen. Although Dr. E. M. Conroy of this city made application at last "night's mass meeting to enlist as the physician in the sa nltary corps of the national guard, there is a possibility that Dr. W, A. Whitloek, a practicing physician of Lay-ton, Lay-ton, may be the man accepted for the place. Dr. Conroy has not asked to be excused, but he is much older than Dr. Whitloek and the troop officers are inclined in-clined to helleve that the adjutant gen-end gen-end will favor acceptance of the younger man. This city is still entitled to six men for the sanitary corps In addition to the physician, but there has been no enlistment enlist-ment as yet. Owing to an error by Senator Sena-tor Joseph Chez last night In announcing that women would be eligible for enlistment enlist-ment in the sanitary corps, two young women called at the armory today and requested to enlist. They were Informed that women could not be accepted for this service and were referred to the Red Cross society. |
