Oliver, chief of navy I intelligence bureau, today vas named ; by Secretary Daniels as governor of the Danish West Indies, which are to oe taken over Saturday by the United States. The ceremonies of transfer will take place at St. Thomas, and in Washington Wash-ington on the same day Secretary Mc-Adoo Mc-Adoo will deliver to the Danish minister minis-ter the government warrant for 000,000 in payment for the islands. Important fortifications will be constructed con-structed and the islands used as a naval base for further protection of the Panama Pana-ma canal and for general military pur- poses. Bear Admiral Oliver will leave Saturday Satur-day for his new post. He will serve until un-til a permanent form of government is 6xed by congress. Secretary Daniels announced an-nounced that two naval vessels the transport Hancock and the cruiser Olympia have been ordered to St. Thomas for the transfer ceremonies. (,'aptain B. B. Bierer. commanding the Hancock, will officiate as the ranking naval officer. The acquisition will be marked by the lowering of the Danish flag acd the raising rais-ing of the Stars and Stripes and firiug of salutes by the two ships. In designating Rear Admiral Oliver as governor of the islauds, the department depart-ment referred to thein as "tho Virgin islands of, the United States," a title suggested by the many islanders. Congress, Con-gress, in appropriating for their acquisition, ac-quisition, failed to give them a new name, and the department's title will stick at least until there is congressional congres-sional action to change it. |
