It was agreed in a conference of the city commissioners yesterday morning that the city is to venture the conduct of a municipal market again this season. sea-son. Robert N. Young, secretary to Mayor W. Mont Ferry, is to be put in charge of the undertaking. Mr. Youug has made a considerable study of the municipal market problem,' prob-lem,' having gathered data by correspondence cor-respondence with cities all over the United States ivhere markets of the kind aro conducted. He was instructed bv tho commission yesterday to have readv for submission this morning a plan" for operation of a city market in Salt Lake. In addition to the general oversight of the market, to bo intrusted to Srr. Young, a market master will be appointed, ap-pointed, who will have active charge of the work of looking after the producers produc-ers who are permitted positions in the vegetable "shopping center." There are numerous applications for the position posi-tion 'of market master, but no indication indica-tion has been given by the commission commis-sion as to who will get the appointment. appoint-ment. The decision to establish a market is in line with the urgent request of the clubwomen of the city. The matter mat-ter was considered at thetinie of the budget sessions of the commission, but deferred for final action. The approach ap-proach of spring made it imperative that some decision be reached. As a result of tho discussion yesterday morning morn-ing it was decided tentatively that the market should be undertaken again and that the mayor's secretary should be put in charge The matter will probably prob-ably be finally decided this morning if the" plans and suggestions submitted by Mr. Young meet with the approval of the commission. While no place for the market has yet been determined upon, it is thought likelv that it will be located at the north side of the grounds of the city and county building, where preparation was made during the time of the previous pre-vious operation of one. The other possible pos-sible location is at Pioneer park, also previously used. The city and county grounds are regarded as more centrally located, however, and will probably be selected. |
