Show HEMES FEAR A COmiMORTAGE Urge Railroads to Aid Tin Plate Plants in Distributing Distrib-uting Cans. To uard against a shortage of canned foods during the coming winter and : following summer that might be oc- , casioned hv lack of a sufficient supply j of tin cans, circulars are being sent to every railroad in tbe country urging ! that thov make special effort to furnish car service for the tinplate factories of the ea.st to deliver their products to the canneries of the west and Pacific coast. Copies of the circular sent out by the Car Service commission of the American Railwav association have been received br the local railroaiia. It is urged in the circular that at least 1000 car loads of tinplate be handled from the factories of the east to the canning plants of the west, and the circular asks that every road do its part toward seeing that the tinplate reaches the factories in time and in quantities to handle their output, out-put, so there may be no food shortage in this line. The canning factories of Utah are interested in-terested in this circular, as they are dependent on the east for most of their cans and containers, and it was pointed out by Oregon Short Line officials yesterday yes-terday that if there were any great shortage of tinplatedue to congestion of cars or lack of equipment Utah -would feel it, as well as the other western and Pacific coast states that are dependent upon the tin cans and containers for packing all sorts of vegetables, condensed con-densed milk and other forms of food: The circular sets forth that 765,000 base boxes of tinplate are necessary annually for the salmon industry, and , a large part of it has :to go to Alaska early in the year to be available for canning can-ning this important article of food. In ' view of this it is urged that the roads hasten all shipments of tinplate to the food canneries. |
