Show HANDBALL TOURNEY CONTESTS ARE CLOSE Reeves, Stewart and Eager Are Winners in Second Day's Battles on Conrt. The preliminary contests in the Deseret gymna.sium handball tournament were continued yesterday with four fast games. The first a ff ra y was won by B . F. Reeves from C. Squires in three sets. The scores were 21-6, 18-21 and 21-16. Reeves rushed hla opponent so fast in the first set that the latter could not settle down to playing a consistent game. The second set was a real battle, with Squires having a shade in general floor work and accuracy of returning the sphere. Reeves came back in the third, set with a series of rushes which Squires j was unable to stop. 1 The second contest of the afterndon j was between A. W. Ansell and Stewart. Ansell won the first set, 21 to 17, but Stewart came back strong in the next two and won the match. The scores of the last two sets were 21-17 and 21-10. The third match was won by Joe Smith from C. S. Gardner in two sets, j The scores were 21-13 and 21-11. Gard- ! ner put up a strong fight, but was no , match for the hard driving of his op- j poncnt. I The final battle of the day was staged 1 by Leo Lager and L. Brinton. Brinton won In two sets, but not without one of the hardest fights of the season. The scores were 21-lti and 21-1S. In the first set Brinton took a four-point lead, which ! he held throughout the set. The second set started with a rush which was main- talned well toward the end. The two contestants alternately led in' the scoring . by one or two points until the count i reached IS. At this stage of the game Brinton called upon his reserve speed 1 and pushed his count to 21 before his 1 opponent could stop t he rush. Only one game will be played today at noon. The women have the use of the gym in the afternoon and the Gymo-drome Gymo-drome circus will prevent contests In the evening. The contestants are Lee Lund and F. M. Whitney. . |
