Since the incorporation, of the city, the residents of Helper have been able to escape the usual city taxes, the reve-nus reve-nus from the ten saloons in the community com-munity supplying a sufficient amount of funds to meet all the operating expenses. ex-penses. This revenue, however, will be taken away from Helper after' August 1, and several owners of large tracts of iand which lie within the limits of Helper city have petitioned to be segregated from the town proper to escape the payment pay-ment of the additional taxes which they foresee. The petition for segregation was filed in the district court . of Carbon county by Joe Barboglio and ADthony Elegatiti whose holdings of land within with-in the limits of the city total 160 acres and comprise one-fifth of tho total area of tbe city. When the petition was filed the city attorney, Leroy A. McGee. appealed to the attorney general for aid. The attorney at-torney general sought the advice of tbe state land board, which body has now given the attorney general Instructions to intervene in behalf of the city of Helper and to prevent, if possible, the segregation being made. The decision of the state land board to have the attorney geueral go to the assistance of the city of Helper was made at a meeting of the board yesterday yes-terday afternoon. Four members of the new board, R. H. Davis of Willard, 0. Willardsen of Ephraim, Arthur Kuhn of Ogden and N. P. Ipson of Beaver, attended the meeting. Richard Jones of Heber'City is snowbound in Idaho and could not attend. It is understood that Mr. Jones will be able to reach Salt Lake today and that the new board will then organize to select its president and secretary. Commissioner Commission-er Kuhn is generally regarded as the member who will be named as - secretary.. |
