Show PROTESTS USE OF LABOR OF CONVICTS Bait Lake Federation Condemns Use of Prisoners on Eailroad Construction. Members of the Salt Lake Federation of Labor went on record at tbeir regular regu-lar meeting last night, held in the Labor temple, protesting against the action ol the state officials m sending convicts to work on tho Denver k Rio Grande washout in the Prico River canyon in competition witli laborers. The protest will bo sent to Governor Bamberger. C. H. Baldwin reported that the shortage short-age of cars on tbe Denver & Rio Grande railroad was caused by the strike of mechanics on the line. He said that several hundred ears were tied up in yalt Lake, and that there would be a shortage of coal it' these difficulties were not settled. A compensa t ion com mission, consisting consist-ing of A. K. Harvey, stute organizer of the t'ederatina of Labor, (J. H. Baldwin, member of the Blacksmiths union, and D. O. Jacobs, business agent of tho district dis-trict council, was appointed to take up the matter of the compensation law with the stale commissioners. The union commission believes that the laborers la-borers should have some voice in arranging ar-ranging n. schedule of amounts to be set nsidn for an-idents and disabilities, and what disposition should be made ol these funds. |
