Producing figures to show that the first year of the war 'will cost the United States more money than three years have cost any ally, Chairman Fitzgerald of the house appropriations " committee today opened debate on a much enlarged deficiency bill. The revised measure carries appropriations appropria-tions and authorizations amounting to $7,753,526,000. "The estimates submitted for the consideration con-sideration of the congress aggregate $5,-615,455,000," $5,-615,455,000," said Fitzgerald. "The bill recommends appropriations of $3,773,979,370 and authorizes contracts to be entered into by the government to the sum Of $1,839,475,000. "After the bill had been completed by the committee, additional estimates aggregating ag-gregating $1,450,000,000, a sum larger than has been expended in any one year since the beginning of the republic, were transmitted trans-mitted to congress for its consideration. Eased on these estimates, amendments will be proposed to the bill increasing the appropriation by $993,604,000 and contract con-tract obligations by $219,202,000.
