Show HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS TO BE DISCUSSED State Association's Annual Meeting to Be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Next Week. PRINCIPALS TO TAKE CHARGE OF AFFAIRS Rule Would Relieve Coaches of Technical Burdens, Leaving Them Free to Develop Teams. The J16 annual meeting of the Utah H igh School At hie tie association will be held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday Fri-day of next week, and for the first tiroo since the organization was formed tho school principals will rule and not tho athletic coaches. It has been unfortunate for athletic followers in Utah, and especially in yalt Lake, that they have been forced to witness numerous squabbles among schools. The fans want to fee games and not quibbling, and (he principals will take over the reins in orticr to put a stop to rowing, if possible. Eligibility rules in tho association are lived up to more or less. The unit rule and the ago rule are constantly constant-ly being brought up. It has been learned upon good authority that a motion mo-tion will be presented to bar athletes immediately upon reaching 21 -ears from further participation in inter-scholastic inter-scholastic sports. At present a boy is permitted to play, providing he has not become 21 before the first day of September Sep-tember of the school year iu which lie participates in sports. The unit, rule will ,bo thoroughly threshed out this year. Credits are accepted ac-cepted for graduation in some rcuooIs, which are of no account in others, and t he principals will no doubt settle this question once and for all. It is of vast, importance to at least one school iu the state. Would Clear Atmosphere. With the principals in charge, followers fol-lowers expect the elimination of the wrangling and the school heads will be responsible for any infraction of the age and other rules instead of the coaches, as at present. Fights among schools in the Salt Lako section have proved disheartening to all f riends of high school athletics, and the putting down of this feature should restore sports to their former high Btandard. The coaches will attend tho meeting, ami it is expected that the school authorities au-thorities will confer with them before oting on numerous questions regarding regard-ing the schedules and registering of athletic ath-letic records, but the principals will decide de-cide on the eligibility regulations. Present indications point to the placing plac-ing of baseball and football under the rules of tho association. Numerous instances in-stances have come to light where men were ineligible under association rules, but inasmuch as these two pastimes were not under the association 's jurisdiction juris-diction the school itself decided whether alleged ineligible players could take part. With league rules governing all sports it would bo more difficult for the athlete who goes to school mainly i for sports to wedgo his way into tho games. Board of Arbitration. A new feature which will no doubt be introduced will be a board of arbitration. arbi-tration. This board will consist of three members who are not connected with any school. The triumvirate will decide all protests and will define those rules which are not clear. This plan would do away with the present board of cont rol. President James E. Mosh, who is at present head of the Murray High school, will call the meeting to order and tho first matter to be considered will bo the election of officers. Mr. Moss is favored by many for re-election. Coach Tommy Fitzpatrick at present is secretary-treasurer. The principals will decide on admitting admit-ting new schools into the- asocial ion. Applications from several newly organized organ-ized institutions will bo considered and will no doubt be accepted. This may mean a reorganization of the southern division. Another subject to be brought up will, be the action on the Davis couuty high school. The Kaysville school wants to be changed from the northern division di-vision and placed in the Bait Lake division. di-vision. Davis county 's object in attempting at-tempting to enter the Salt Lake division di-vision is tc avoid the long trips which are nt-cessary in the northern division. Kaysville is' eager to play Salt Lake schools, but the question of admitting the Dcvis county school is expected to bo met with opposition. May Return to Fold. A great deal of interest is being manifested man-ifested by local fans in the meeting, if ' for no other reason than that Jordan 1 and Granite return to the fold. Ath-; Ath-; authorities of both schools are cautious in discussing teh matter. The annual high school track meet has heretofore .been held in Salt Lako and this city probably will be chosen again tor tho 1P17 meet. In basketball the final games axe a feature which many towns are eager to obtain. For several years the B. V. U. of Provo conducted the tournament, hot last year Brigham City was the scene of the bitter battles. U is probable that no pi a -o will be chosen at this time and the meot will go to the highest high-est bidder, which will probably moan one of the towns which turns out a division champion. The school authorities authori-ties are expected to appoint a committee commit-tee to take charge of the tourney. Officials Of-ficials for the tourney will bo picked at the annual meeting. |
