Show i LEOPARDS' GRIDIRON SMilSAI Wl EfiD Trip to Walla Walla Rejected Re-jected Because of Weather. i Football at the East high school is 1 over until next September. Coach Tom my I'it.putrirk announced yesterday i tliat the proposition made by the Walla' Walla hitfh school football management for a game in that city on New Year's day had been rejected, because the period pe-riod was too long to keep the Leopards in trim and the present weather condi-; condi-; lions would prove harmful to the grirl- ders. 1 Last Friday night the grand finale i was recorded when the Girls' Athletic association gave a banquet for the "Leopards. To say the least, it was a I grand feed, and the annual spreads are j regarded a big feature of every foot- : ball season. The usual speeches were made following the banquet, and it be came known that more than fifteen let-j let-j ter men will return for the 1017 cam paign. i It mav have proved a disappointment to several that the captain for the 1917 team was not chosen last week, as is, the custom, but Coach Fitzpatrick deferred de-ferred the election indefinitely, and probably the leader will not be chosen until next year. Another reason for the refusal to take the Walla Walla trip was the eagerness of the coach to get his Leopards going for basketball. Fitz has some excellent excel-lent material, and although the East high is not the favorite for high honors, it would not bo a surprise to a large number to see the Leopards out in front at the end. Of tho letter men there are: Captain Cap-tain Mart Ottinger, Edwin Peabody, Mitt Eomiiev, Lyman Chipman and i Verde -Michelson. ' All of the men have j been out during the past week and ! present indications point to a fast or- ga nization. Verde Miohelson, who earned his "H" lost year as utility forward, has i been the sensation of the training pe- j riod, and it is a safe prediction that he will rank as one of the five best I forwards when the year is over. It appears at the present time that 1 the five letter men will compose the I first team, although it is rather early ! to forecast. No startling material has i been uncovered in the games of the i class series to date, although several ; possibilities have cropped out. Ernest Hind at center for the seniors is improving right along. He is new i at the game, but looks good for the I first squad. Glen Anderson, center of ' i the sophomores, is also doing good ! work, while Clyde Worley, Paul Dorius j and Neil Smith of the juniors are also going great guns. Smith is a forward and a nifty player. He shoots 'em from all angles and is a quick player. Worley Wor-ley on defense shows to best advantage, while Dorius as a guard has lots of stuff. The seniors have yet to put up ; their stars, having played but one ! game. ! The basketball team will go to Amer- ican Fork Friday. Fitz will take eight players, including five regulars and i three from the class teams. The squad will not be chosen until after the holidays. Twenty men will be chosen in all and after some weed-! weed-! ing a first and a second squad will ! be designated, but any on the first will not be fixtures, because it will be an easv matter to switch men from the second to first and vice versa. 4 Football Results 1 At Boston Final: Depauw, 0; Somer-vilK Somer-vilK 7.
