Show i ?v LAST ! ! "Advertising Pain- " less Dentistry, the V Fourth Cardinal " Sin," Says the Trust ' ?S - Dentist. I T A PERSONAL WORD Wo are Hearing the end of the long discussion of the "Four Cardinal j Sins of the Advertising Dentists," as viewed by the Trust Dentist, and I sincorely hope the public has shown as much interest in the articles as have my friends the members of the Dental Trust. Tlieso four "cardinal sins1' were given as the REASONS why the "Ethical Dentists" fought the Advertising Dentists. I have tried honestly and without fear or favor to either side to show that, instead of theso "sins" being the "REASONS" for the Trust hatred, they were merely tlicir "EXCUSES." I am willing to have my views and 1 principles as given in the series of articles compared with the "Code of Ethics" of the Dental Trust by every fair-minded person. S If the articles have hurt the feelings of some of the more sensitive sensi-tive souls of the Dental Trust, I can only say that my bitterest invec-I invec-I tives -were furnished me by Trust Dentists alone. " j If they shall havo the effect of serving a warning on the Quacks and Charlatans that they are no safer plying their nefarious trade as Advertising Dentists than they were as "Ethical" Dentists it will be worth all it has cost. ' It will bo noted by close observers that at present (at legist) the men behind the "Dental Companies" are coming to the front with their names; that guarantees are more honestly worded, and that prices generally are coming down and after this week I fully expect j to see that much-abused phrase. "Painless Dentistry," used with more regard for truth and common sense. V. L. WITHERS, D. D. S. PAINLESS DENTISTRY DISCUSSED The Members of the So-called Ethical Dental Societies make the charge that: "Advertising all dental operations as Painless is untrue, positively silly and unbusinesslike. " I hardly think any sane man. Dentist or layman, will dispute that statement; but. like many of the "charges" made by the Trust, it is ambiguous, misleading and insincere, and beclouds the real issue,, which is: ' S "Do Dentists as a whole use every possible effort (Including time 1 and expense) to minimize or eliminate pain in the Dental Chair?" i SI not only CLAIM they do not I KNOW THEY DO NOT. 1 Scarcely a day passes but what some nervous woman, or some a timid child, tells me, or mv associates, how they put off their visit until thev could delay no longer, because thev FEARED TO COME I TO A DENTIST. . ' 8 They tell of Dr. Blank, who was "so rough" or Dr. So-and-So, who was "positively brutal," and of some other Dentist -who "rushed them through, " and it was this very state of affairs that spurred me on to figure out a method of Anesthesia that would permit me to extract ex-tract teeth painlessly and to minimize the pain in other operations. Personally, I believe there is too much danger attendant upon, giving giv-ing promiscuously "laughing gas." "air,': "nitrous oxide," "somno- I form" and similar anesthetics, and that they should be given only In urgent cases, and then only by a competent physician. I I also realized that the average person cannot afford to pay two professional fees for the extraction of teeth hence my ambition to discover a LOCAL ANESTHETIC which was SAFE, POTENT AND WITHOUT UNTOWARD AFTER-EFFECTS. I succeeded in securing just su.-h an Anesthetic, and because of my use of this alone my patients called me "Painless Withers," which name became so much a part of mv professional cognomen that I incorporated in-corporated the Painless Withers Dental Coiupanv. I claim this for my method. just this, and nothing more: (1) I have proven iu thousands of cases that teeth may he extracted ex-tracted in nearly every Instance -with practically no pain. (2) I have in many instances, where such procedure became necessary nec-essary because of excessively sensitive teeth EXTRACTED LIVT NERVES WITHOUT GIVING THE PATIENT A QUIVER OF PAIn! (3) I have instructed my Associates to use such timo and such methods as may be necessary to insure my patients the least possible I amount ot distress or inconvenience while in the Dental Chair This often necessitates doing difficult work on sensitive teeth by easy 'stages I and in several visits, but THE CHARGE IS NO MORE. Someone said: "When you are doing all the talking be doubly careful what you say. 1 have had that in mind in all these article ! I have made some strong claims, but I stand rcadv to prove each and 1 every assertion, and to that end I cordially invite" tile public at lare S or a delegation from the .Dental Trust, to 'visit mv offices at any tin.e I and learn lor tnemve that here is one Dental Office that does ex- I actly as it adverti.-os, and advertises exactly what it does.
